As discussed in another thread. Is an overnight away a good way to help this get going? Don't they just cry for you anyway? I assume you'd have to have a very willing and understanding baby sitter. Or what if my dh would do it? It's too early for us to night wean...just planning ahead.

DH stayed home with DS for my 5-night trip. (was supposed to be 4 nights, but bad weather kept me stuck in Arizona at the airport for a night)
I think they could have done a better job with night waking and night weaning. DS was 16 mos and did not need to be waking that often at night. Also, DH was very good at putting DS back to sleep. DS slept/sleeps very well with him.
BUT, DH thought DS was hungry when he woke at 1am, and so he fed him puffs (puffed corn cereal). Every night I was away, they had a "puffs party" (complete with a showing of Wonderpets or similar on some nights) between 1 and 2 am. AARUGH! So not necessary.
DS is almost 3. Just the other day, he and DH were talking about DS being a baby. DH asked him what he remembered. DS told him, "I eat puffs with you in the bedroom."

DH and I took an overnight trip for our anniversary when DS was 16 months old.. He was still waking every 1-2 hours to nurse at the time, but he stayed with my MIL and she slept with him and he did great, no crying at all.. I don't think taking an overnight trip will help with nightweaning.... I am not saying taking overnight trips aren't a good idea, but not for the purpose of nightweaning.
We nightweaned at 19 months using the Dr Jay Gordon method, but just taking it slower. Basically I shortened the amount of time he could nurse to about 10 seconds, and then unlatched him and told him to go back to sleep. He never cried, only fussed for a second and was back to sleep. Once his body got used to not getting calories at night, he stopped waking so much. Once we got down to only 2-3 wakeups (about a month later), we moved DS to his own bed and had DH take over wakeups. He, again, never cried when DH went to him.. and now 4 months later he is STTN 90% of the time.
