nighttime potty training - am i thinking this through correctly?

relevant background info
- we started potty training a week and a half ago with immediate success.
- she's 21-months old.
- she sleeps in a crib in her own room.
- she does not do well in a family bed. (plays entire time and doesn't sleep)

okay, so i thought that parents were supposed to put no effort into trying to encourage nighttime potty learning. either a kid can physically do it or they can't. so i thought the logical thing to do is to have her wear a diaper for naps and nighttime.

but...

she wakes up in the middle of the night and asks to pee. okay...now what?

i'm assuming this means i need to get her undressed and let her potty. yes? no?

drawback...she is not good at falling back asleep after i take her too pee. last night i was a "silent loving presence" in her room as she sang her ABCs and twinkle twinkle little star for an hour and a half! cute, yeah. but really, i wanted to go to bed. if she doesn't have that presence in her room, she'll cry. sigh.

so what should i do? it sounds counter-productive to ignore her request to pee and "train" her to pee her diaper at night.

I personally would take her to pee, but keep it quiet and dim, minimal activity. then tuck her back in with a going to sleep routine. after the routine if you feel you need to stay with her a reasonable amount of time (15-30min?) if necessary. then tell her mommy is going night-night and will see her in the morning. if you always stay with her an hour and a half it will become a habit for her to stay up that long in the middle of the night.

thank you for your response.

since i wrote you, she has not repeated the behavior. instead, she seems to be self-learning to hold it at night. when she wakes up in the morning, the first words out of her mouth are "pee, potty, pee, potty, pee, potty!!!" i'm amazed by how well this is going.

You could also try limiting fluids in the evening, so that she's less likely to need to go at night.
