What helps diarrhea in a 5 year old?

I'm going to get a few things for my son after work this afternoon. He has had a bad cold and now woke up this morning with diarrhea. Don't know if they are part of the same thing or if he has two different issues going on. Anyway, I thought I'd pick up some coconut water and some bland foods. I'm planning on making some chicken soup from scratch when I get home. I'm thinking that will help his cold and tummy issues. I need to get some good probiotics too, we ran out and I haven't gotten any more. Anything else I'm missing? He has no fever and his tummy isn't really hurting him that bad. Just has the runs. I'm wondering if it's all the drainage he's had from his cold. Any advice would be most helpful!!! Thanks mamas!

For diarrhea you want the BRATT diet until symptoms are gone: bananas, rice, applesauce, tea and toast.

The BRATT diet is good for diarrhea. I've also used rice milk which often helps my kids when they have a stomach bug. Another trick I learned years ago is to dice an apple and let it turn brown. If he'll eat it that way it can really help because apples contain pectin which is binding. The pectin increases or becomes more available (not sure which) when you let an apple turn brown.

Yogurt. Probiotics. Definitely limit fruit (esp. grapes, melons, plums, peaches, nectarines...) and veggies. Plenty of crackers and bread-type products. I've had no problem with dairy in moderation (ie. cereal with milk), but I wouldn't go crazy with it.

Yogurt ( or some other form of probiotics) and BRAT. I cook white rice in chicken broth, so it has some sort of taste. My husband ate that and banans and toast for 5 days last year during a really bad stomach bug. If he likes apples, try to encourage him to eat the skin as well, as that is the most binding part.

Also something with electrolytes in it makes me feel better about dehydration, depending on the severity of the diarhea. Most people here probably dont like Pedialyte, but I like it just fine.
