Low body temp., always cold.

I was wondering if there is a reason for this, aside from being anemic (I'm not). My normal temperature is about 97.0. A fever for me if I am very sick is around 98.5, and my temp has gone down a lot when I've gotten sick or had migraines, down to 95.6 at one point. Is there a reason for this? I've always been this way...maybe my body just runs at a lower temp? I also have no tolerance for cold at all. During the winter, it feels like I'm literally chilled to the bone, I get so cold outside that it hurts. It is miserable where I work because my office mates like to keep it cold. I'm comfortable with the thermostat set to 78-79, and when it gets down to about 74, I am freezing, to the point where my hands are cold and start to hurt from it. I'm at an average weight...I'm about 5'5" and 120 pounds, but I do have EDs and go through spurts of extreme calorie restriction, then I swing in the other direction to binge/purging, then back to restriction, etc. However, my temps and cold intolerance have been like this even during healthier periods when my EDs were not such a problem.

Anyone experience this?

I'm the same way. I usually have to run my heater at work during the summer because they have it so cold in here.

I am borderline anemic and when I was temping regularly while ttc, my temps were always below 98. The only health problems I have is endometriosis and I can't see how that would contribute to it.

I don't know, I always thought it was just me, I'm just cold.

I think an underactive thyroid can cause low body temps and the feeling of being cold all the time.

I have a low body temp (and low BP... and low blood sugar) and I'm always HOT!

That is a symptom of hypothyroidism.

Yeah - it could be hypothyroid or it could be something else.

I'm cold all the time too - and I'm mildly hypothyroid. I asked my naturopath the other day that if I found the right hypo treatment, would it make my feet warm??? That is really all I care about. I have limited other symptoms (except infertility - which is a MAJOR symptom / side effect, but doesn't affect my actual health if you know what i mean) but physically speaking I don't seem to have other issues like weight gain etc.

I'm on thryoid meds and my tests show my levels are just fine, but tonight I'm sitting here with woolen socks, ugg boots, track pants, a cardigan and a sweatshirt on (and the hood pulled up) - with 2 blankets - and its about 55 degrees outside. My husband is in shorts and t'shirt!

You should get your thyroid checked, then you can strike it off the list or be treated.

I used to be cold all the time and since I started taking Iodoral (iodine) I am not.

We were talking about the thyroid/being cold thing at work the other day. I've had mine tested several times and it's always been fine.

Consistently low bod temp is one of the most common hypothyroid symptoms.
Also, it is extremely common for ppl to be told that their thyroid labs are "normal" even though they continue to have symptoms. This is due in large part to outdated lab testing and a lack of understanding of the wide range of thyroid symptoms that many ppl have.

Quote:
It is estimated that millions of people are not being adequately treated for their under active thyroid conditions. This is largely due to the fact that lab tests are not always accurate at detecting thyroid dysfunction. Until recent years doctors treated the thyroid based on the signs & symptoms that the patient presented with during office visits. Presently, however, the TSH test, which tests pituitary hormone has become the sole method of testing for most doctors. There are a growing number of practitioners who are expanding their methods of testing and are committed to treating based on symptoms. However, you will likely have to seek out these providers.

Thyroid Self Test

Quote:
To test yourself at home for an under active thyroid try the following:

Keep a thermometer by your bedside, and when you awaken, place it under your arm for 15 minutes before getting up. Stay as still as possible during this time so as not to upset your reading.

Record your temperature in this way for 5 consecutive days.

If the temperature is consistently 97.6 degrees F or lower, consult your health care practitioner.
mellowjello Iodoral is the only thing that has helped bring my body temp up as well. And it stopped the falling hair - finally! Yay!

Infertility is a major side effect of hypothyroidism.

See my recent thread about "normal" tests yet still HypoT symptoms. Blood tests do not test all the factors that can influence thyroid function.

Dr. Stephen Langer's book talks a lot about infertility and hypoT:

Ditto what previous poster said.

Ok I read the big thyroid thread and I think I'm more confused.

I was diagnosed with endo a few years ago and all my issues seem to stem from that. Although honestly I never thought of being cold as an issue until now. I guess I'll have to keep researching.

Allyson, have you been to http://stopthethyroidmadness.com? It's chock full of great info and personal stories. Very interesting stuff. I too have tested "normal," but they don't use the best test so it's virtually worthless.

Thanks, I'll check it out!
