baby not able to process sugar in my milk - Page 2

He weighed 7lbs 15oz at birth (May 21). I will admit there was a time he was not gaining weight well. I believe it was because something in my diet was not allowing him to digest and absorb nutrients properly. I feel that has now been remedied and in one week gained almost 1.4 oz a day. I am staying off the dairy, soy, gluten, and oats for the time being. His stools look much better and he is gaining.

The ped called again yesterday and left another message that he still wasn't the weight she wanted and wants him to come in next week to be weighed again. I'm not sure what she is expecting. How much weight can a baby gain in a week? It was almost an oz and a half a day! What is realistic? We are sticking with her for the time being. I just try to keep in mind that although she is misguided in this respect, she does have his health in mind. With the exception of wanting him to go on that crap.

Our babies have the same birthday

My LC's have said that for the first few months of life, 0.5 oz to 1 oz per day is the goal weight gain. So your guy's gaining over 1 oz per day is awesome! WTG! He'll catch up in no time.

Kellymom says the same thing.

When you go in, do find out what tests she was referring to when she said he can't tolerate the sugar in your milk. I'd really suggest asking for a referral to the children's hospital, my dd who was ftt had a bunch of tests to see if she had absorption issues and it was all done through metabolics and genetics and with a nutritionist. The pede should refer you out if its an absorption issue.

According to Kellymom:

If he's gaining over an ounce a day, he's definitely on track! If he was having some gaining issues in the past your pedi absolutely CANNOT expect him to just all of a sudden get up to where she thinks he should be. It's not about having him up to the expected weight, it's about making sure he continues to gain well from here on out. No matter how well he's eating he's not just going to automatically make up for the time lost. And that's assuming he really did have a gaining problem. As I'm pretty sure I mentioned before, she is also very likely using weight charts based on formula fed babies which at about 4 months and on are FATTER than breastfed babies, so to someone who doesn't know any better it makes breastfed babies look like they're not gaining enough, when in reality the charts are based on babies who are gaining too much.

I would seriously bring up the breastfed baby chart (it's on kellymom) and also the link above. Print them out and show them to her. Not to mention, even the breastfed babies chart is just an AVERAGE. You have to have a baby in the 1st percentile and a baby in the 99th percentile to have someone in the 50th percentile. As long as baby doesn't have a drastic fall (on the bf baby charts, not the ff charts) then don't worry! Clearly he is gaining well. She needs to either educate herself or leave it alone. She may honestly have his best interest at heart but she's going about it in a way that's putting his health at risk, not helping him.
