Best science magazine for five-year old? - Page 2

Haha... I think an age range of 6-9 would be suitable for a keen 5yo. I recall that we subscribed to YES! a year before the suggest age range and we were fine. Worst case scenario, you have to help him read and understand a few things. If they're keen on science, I'd rather err on the side of a little bit challenging than not challenging enough.

If it was a kid who was resistant to science, I'd be more inclined to stick with the easier stuff, so they can focus instead on how fun it is without struggling with understanding it. But it doesn't sound like you have that problem.

Oh, one more thing -- with the Cricket line of magazines, you can transfer your subscription to ANY OTHER MAGAZINE they publish at any time!!! So if you try the older magazine and it's too old, just call them and they'll switch it. Or vice versa, if you try Click and it's too easy.

We've done this a couple times, DS subscribes to several of their publications and we've changed a few over the years as he got older and his interests changed. It was always as easy as that -- give them a call, talk about our options, change the subscriptions, bam, done.

Hate Your Big Backyard
Just wondering why you hate Your Big Backyard? We've been getting this for awhile now, FIL got it for DD as a gift. There are no ads. I wouldn't say that it is packed with tons of info in every issue, but I've found it to have a lot of good info about different animals throughout, as well as a craft here and there, a fun food idea, and book recommendations. DD and I read through it in one sitting and we both always learn something new. I'm not trying to defend it by any means, but I am curious about the negative comment since I haven't noticed anything objectionable.

I'm not that fond of Click for a 5-year old sciencey kid. DH's parents asked for suggestions for a magazine for her last year (when she was 5), and I suggested Ask would be appropriate (she was 5). They, whom have met their grand-daughter a total of 3 times, if I recall, decided to ignore my suggestion, stick to the age recommendations instead, and got her Click.

I have a sciencey kid, an it was not the right level for her. I wish I had known that I could swap her subscription!

I think we're going to try Know or Kids Discover now instead, though.

Thanks! I think we're going to go with Ask. It will be a Christmas gift so my DS will be almost 5.5 y.o. at that point anyway.

I think I get Discover for Kids and maybe National Geographic for Kids. They seem a little ahead for the average 5 yr old, but if your child is really in to it, he might really like them. If not, you can hold on to them for when he is ready, so no loss on getting the subscription.

I was wondering this, too. We have been getting Your Big Backyard for years for our kids and we love it. It's simple, but has great pictures and just enough info... not too much but just right for a young child.

Yes, there are two NG Kids mags. One is for the preschool age range and one is for the older (K+ range). I think one is "kids" and one is "little kids".

That was my son. He actually did really well with Ask and Kids Discover. That being said, I found that he really enjoyed stuff written for his AGE (vs. his ability age-equivalent) as well because it was an easy read, but intellectually, he was still 5--ya know? So the content was still interesting for him and it wasn't a challenge to read. Kind of like when they like playing baby toys because they've already mastered it kind of thing.

That was my kid, too. That being said, my kid was heavy on the solar system and weather where the magazine explored other science areas. So it worked for us. And because he was a "science" kid, he ate it up. That being said, Kids Discover is more in depth and each issue covers a single topic from many angles--so that may be one to look for, too.

I haven't seen Know yet, but Kids Discover would probably be a great fit. See comment just above.
