4 1/2 month old and feeding

My 4 1/2 month old ds has been nursing exclusively, no real problems with it, great latch, I have a good supply, he is growing and thriving, is bright and alert, he has regular poops, pees a lot... BUT, his appetite has decreased a lot these past few weeks.

For example, yesterday he ate at around 9am and then he refused to eat until about 2pm! He wants to eat about every 5-6 hours now, which is concerning because I feel he should be still eating more frequently than that. I always offer, but he has no interest. All in all, for the past few weeks he has been nursing about 4 times/day, and only wants to nurse when he is falling asleep (or is asleep). He is quite uninterested in nursing when he is awake. That being said, I do nurse him several times throughout the night, i'd say about 3-4 times/night.

I'm not sure what the point of all this was... I just want some reassurance, or advice. My other children were the opposite, and nursed CONSTANTLY, so this is new to me

I panicked when my 4 mo old did this too! If he is nursing ~8 times in 24 h (which it sounds like he is), peeing well and gaining weight well, then I was told it is a normal transition. My guy got more efficient and went from about 18 feeds/24h to about 8.

Now, he stopped nursing as well because of a cold last week and I got engorged, so now I know that I will be able to tell if he is not feeding as well. I had to nurse lying down with him in a calm room, or in the bathroom with the shower running.

Thanks for the reply. My little guy did the same thing as yours, went from about 16 feeds in 24 hours, and then (what seemed like overnight) he decided that he wanted only about 7 or 8.

At least I know its 'normal'.

Sounds normal to me. Is your babe learning something new right now? Feeding changes sometimes go along with milestones.
Also, don't be surprised if next week he's back to the old pattern. Or doing something else entirely new!

My fears were put to rest today when I took him to the NP for his 4 month checkup... he is 4 1/2 months and 16 pounds (born @ 6.4 lbs). He is def. my biggest baby so far. The NP laughed and said that he is def. getting enough mama milk

Thanks for the reassurance
