Baby wakes every time I set her down.

My nine month DD slept through the night from age 5-7 months for 10 hour stretches. Now she is waking every hour -2 hours. I can get her to fall back asleep fairly easily by walking, rocking, nursing but every single time I set her down she wakes up wide awake and cries. I've tried keeping my hands on her for several minutes, waiting until she is completely asleep (thought I'd like her to learn to fall asleep on her own). I'll attempt to put her down several times and each time she wakes. Eventually I'll give up and bring her to our bed.....less than ideal, because then I don't sleep, the dog might jump on her or the husband might elbow her. It's tight sleeping quarters, what can I say.
Any advice would be helpful. I'm also reading Elizabeth Pantley's book, but so far hasn't worked too well with us and doesn't address the actual putting her down issue.

Two thoughts: One, maybe try a different method of putting her down? We recently rearranged our room so the head of the crib is on the opposite side of the way I usually cradle DD. I thought it would be hard to get her in the crib the right way, but it's actually been way more effective because now I am forced to place her legs first in an upright seated position before laying her down. Second, well, it's annoying, but I hold my DD all the way through a single sleep cycle, at least at the start of the night. Once I see her through to the second cycle, I can put her down just fine. Oh, and one more thing - when I use the swaddle blanket or dress DD in thick footie PJs she doesn't seem to notice the transition as much.

I always found with my boys I had to do the arm flop test. Basically I would lift their arm up slightly, while I was holding them, and if I felt any sort of resistance I would keep holding them for a while but if I lifted their arm and it just flopped straight down I would know I could put them down.

Also, I would bounce them to get them to sleep but once they drifted off I would stop bouncing and just hold them without any movement for a few minutes. That seemed to make putting them down easier because they didn't go from movement to no movement all of a sudden.

Or you could try shutting the dog out and getting a bigger bed. Personally that's the option I'd go for because I can't handle trying to get kids back to sleep in the middle of the night.
