Seriously? So did I get this right? TH White wrote a book, the Sword in the Stone? I assumed the movie was based upon the Once and Future King.
Edited to add, ohhhhh, I see what you mean. Basically he wrote four Arthur/Merlin stories and they were eventually published together, making one volume.
But the Sword in the Stone is still printed separately, and that version is different from the version in the Once and Future King.
Very cool. I may have to hunt one down. |
The Once And Future King is a big epic tome made of four volumes - more interconnected than sequels, more like the three books of LOTR. The first is The Sword in the Stone, which he originally wrote as a more childish standalone. Then he revised it, made it longer and darker, and added three more books - um. The Queen of Air and Darkness (largely about Morgause), The Ill-Made Knight (largely about Lancelot) and The Candle in the Wind (about Mordred, Lancelot's affair with Guenevere and the subsequent war - the "everything goes to custard" tragic ending, really). I think. Some of them have alternate titles.

They were all published as The Once and Future King, and then years and years later - possibly after his death? - a shorter fifth book was added, The Book of Merlyn. It's kind of a recap that takes place before the end of the fourth book, and I don't like it very much - the ending to the fourth book was absolutely perfect, and TBOM just covers old ground. Most volumes of TOAFK don't include it, and it can be pretty hard to get hold of.
Clear as mud?
