Anti-cloth attitude on the What to Expect website

I can't say I'm terribly surprised, but this is pretty bad. There's a checklist for baby stuff on the What to Expect page and this was under cloth diapers:

Quote:
For those in the anti-plastic camp, home-delivery is the way to go, as home-laundered diapers can’t be properly sanitized. (Either way, cloth diapers are more work.) Start with 24 to 60 prefolded cotton diapers, liners, four covers (unless using all-in-ones), and pins (metal over plastic, which crack).
Sanitized? Why would diapers need to be SANITIZED? What's wrong with washing them, just like I'd wash a onesie that got poop on it? And honestly, calling us the "anti-plastic camp" just makes us look like freaks from the start. Then they toss in the bit about more work (not really) and pins cracking (except that you don't really need pins). What was the point of the bit about pins cracking anyway? Just one more thing to show how terrible cloth diapers are?

It just annoyed me.

Maybe they are sponsored by a diaper company. Either way you're right on all points.

just one more reason to hate wte

My thoughts on that very narrow view.

I was just talking about wte with my sis (pg with her first ) and warned her that the books fine but do have some pretty silly ideas on certain topics.

The problem with the WTE franchise is that it's really just the founder's opinions. almost nothing is backed up by complete research into different sides of an issue. since the founder is a very mainstream suburban soccer-mom, the entire franchise just reflects her narrow world view.

Anti-plastic = Anti-sposie That's funny.

We use plastic pins here, um, no cracks!

Ha! That was my first thought, too!

I think it makes them look a bit wacky even to a "mainstream" person. I know lots of people who would never even consider using cloth diapers, but who don't refer to people who do use them as "anti-plastic".

I'm not sure what they meant about a diaper service being better. What would a diaper service do to the diapers that I wouldn't do at home? Wash and then dry the diapers? Isn't that what I do at home now?
