Someone put my mind at ease...

At my last midwife appointment on Thursday, my urine dip came back with leukocytes (sp?)- +3 I believe. My midwife said if I don't have any symptoms, that typically this is due to an asymptomatic UTI. I took mega doses of Vit. C and Cranberry over the weekend, hoping to knock it out. Retested on Monday and levels are down, but still +2. I sent a urine sample out to be cultured to see exactly what is going on.

The receptionist called me this AM with results. She said the urine test came back abnormal, but there is no treatment. Just let them know if I develop any new/strange symptoms. I have to admit at this point I am FREAKING out. I asked her what the issue is, but she didn't know and one of the midwives is going to call me back today.

Has anyone ever gone through this, or heard of a situation like this before? I know my midwife will answer my questions, but in the mean time hoping for a little piece of mind. TIA!

I have problems with dehydration due to heartburn and have had + for leukocytes throughout with no UTI.

I've had leukocytes in my urine at about 1/2 my appointments so far. My mw is not concerned. she said I'm just probably not completely emptying my bladder. she said to stand up when I'm done peeing, then sit back down & try again. so far I've had no issues.

I don't think you need to freak out today... I do think that you need to talk to your midwife about treatments you are both comfortable with.

Sounds like you have ASB (or asymptomatic bacteruria). Some people would say this is why urine is checked at prenatal visits even when someone has no symptoms of a bladder infection. An untreated bladder infection can lead to other problems- the two most concerning in pregnancy are a kidney infection or preterm labor.

There are lots of natural treatment options and then there's antibiotics (I'm not so much for that- but it isn't my pregnancy).

Good luck!

Thanks for the responses! The culture showed that I didn't have a UTI, so basically there is nothing to treat at this point- versus what I was thinking, that I had something untreatable! Ofcourse she'll keep checking urine and evaluate my options if something is to change. I'm going to keep up my Vit. C and cranberry though, in smaller doses.

It was just alarming for me, because I've never had any sort of urine test or otherwise come back with anything but the "normal" results.'

I don't know about numbers but I've had slight indications twice during this pregnancy. My MWs just encouraged me to drink a lot of water and take probiotics and keep an eye on it over subsequent tests (which came back negative). So unless your MWs indicate otherwise, you might look at your overall diet and hydration to address any problems there before you start looking at anything more drastic.

I had the same problem with leukocytes and my MW told me to start taking D-Mannose. I've been taking it every day for months and haven't had any more problems with the leukocytes. Check it out.

Leukocytes basically just means WBC in the urine, usually because of bacteris- if you do a "clean catch" that usually resolves it. I test my urine at home, and it always has them in it from mixing with discharge unless I wipe with a baby wipe first, then pee a little before collecting. No biggie at all, unless you have symptoms of a UTI. HTH!
