Could Tetanus Booster be the Source of All of My Problems??

Let me start off by saying that I'm 29 years old and was fully vaxed as a child. Most of these vax's, however, took place in the early 80's so I don't know how much has really changed since then in terms of vaccine components.

I have always had very sensitive skin. I have to remove tags in my clothing, I react easily to poison ivy and have a pretty bad nickel allergy which was discovered after I got my ears pierced at 3.

Despite all of this, I had always been fine wearing makeup, perfume, and most deodorants and could even use the bottom shelf, cheapo shampoos and conditioners.

About 7 years ago, all of this changed. I started to develop a really bad skin allergy to pretty much everything that isn't labeled "for sensitive skin." I developed a rash on my armpits, eyelids, cheeks, around my lips, and in the corners of my elbows. I analyzed my life, diet, and everything that could have possibly changed, but I couldn't figure it out.

What I finally figured out is that I'm allergic to almost all of my hair products, and most of my makeup and almost every deodorant on the market except Dove Sensitive Skin (God, please don't let that company ever go out of business!!). Sometimes the problem flares up when I'm dusting my house and certain foods seem to trigger it, too (mandarin oranges?). The thing is, it was like this all came out of the blue. For the past 7 years, it's been a huge issue in my life and it makes me so depressed because I never know when it will flare up or what will suddenly cause it.

I have always just assumed I'd never figure out what suddenly made me allergic to the world...until I had a baby and started researching vaccines. I came to the realization that that same month that I started having this issue, I had finally had gotten health insurance so I visited a doctor. I really just wanted to get birth control pills, but she insisted that I needed a tetanus booster, so I got one.

I don't really remember if the problem started right after the vaccine or not but I know it was within the same few weeks because I had just started a new job, which is how I got the insurance to begin with, and was wondering if I was allergic to the workplace or something.

So has anyone ever heard of someone developing severe skin allergies because of the tetanus booster?

The real reason I'm asking....
I am totally paranoid now because I have a 4 month old son and I just declined all of his vaccinations again this morning. If it is possible that I had an allergic reaction to the tetanus vaccine, then could that be hereditary and maybe I could pass it on to my son? Is there a big difference between the tetanus booster and the DTaP? I wanted to get him the DTaP because although he is not in daycare, I work two nights a week with high school kids and I know they can carry pertussis. I'd hate to bring it back to him and I don't want to have to avoid public places for fear of him getting this.

Anyway, if anyone can shed some light on this or ease my mind it would be appreciated. I wouldn't wish this skin allergy on my worst enemy so I'd hate to know I could've prevented my baby boy from it. Thanks so much in advance and sorry this is soooo long!!!

Could it be the birth control pills? I bring that up because my nurse midwife put me on a new (to me) brand of birth control pills last October-ish, and in November, I started getting really dry lips. I thought it was just winter, but as winter went on, they cracked, bled, got scaly, peeled off almost completely, turned RED, swelled, I got a red rash around them, it was AWFUL, and they hurt like crazy. It wasn't until March-ish when it started to get warm that I realized, wait a minute, all this started about a month after I went on that brand of pill...I went to the doc, got my script changed and haven't had any issues since. But holy cow, it was horrible while it was happening.

Hi,
Thanks for responding! Well, I have been off the BCP for over 2 years now. The brand she prescribed me was different than what I had been taking, but I ended up going to a different doc who switched me to a generic form of the brand I had taken for years before. I was on BCP for about 10 years though altogether, so maybe that affected me more than I thought? I haven't gone back on it because it took me a full year for my cycles to get back to normal after going off of them the first time. I would like to get pregnant again at some point and just don't want to mess with them again until I'm sure I'm done having children.

It could be that something changed from going on that other pill for a month. I'm not sure what it is but it still plagues me to this day.

Gemini, first of all, do not beat yourself up for anything "you did" to make this happen. It just happened, and you're not responsible for your body's freak outs!

I have a similar story -- I have always been sensitive and allergic to many things dermatologically (no food allergies, thank goodness). However, I got VERY bad poison ivy (needed prednisone after half of my body swelled up) and have been extremely sensitive since then. Well, then I went and got bitten by some exotic bugs in Southeast Asia (I even had DEET on!). That set off YEARS of eczema (sounds like your rash might be eczema). I reacted to tons of things I never had before -- soaps, shampoos, even things like when rough fabric rubbed on my abdomen -- I'd get a rash from that.

My advice is to go see an immunologist. You can go through your symptoms with them and see if they can recommend some treatment. The interesting thing about allergies and immune disruptions is that the more you let them rage on, the more they can get caught in a feedback loop and get worse. In other words, your body reacts to some outside stimulus >> you get a rash >> your blood levels of histamines and other stuff rises >> this makes you more sensitive >> your body reacts to MORE outside stimuli >> you get a worse rash >> this increases the levels in your blood more...etc!

My immunologist told me to start using corticosteroid cream when I got a flare-up to help break the cycle. He also warned me it would be a while before my body calmed down and was normal again. It took two years, but I finally am mostly back to the point where I was before the poison and bug bites. I still take an antihistamine every day (class B, thank goodness) to control things.

Ok, long story. Sorry! But I've been there and with help got back to normal.

Things to keep in mind: you can develop allergies at any time (even if you're not "sensitive" and you never had them before). So this may be completely idiopathic -- you may never know the cause.

Another thing: the synthetic hormones (estrogens and progesterones) in pills can be allergic triggers. Some women are even allergic to the hormones their own bodies produce (natural hormones)! So it could have been triggered by BC.

It also could have been triggered by additives in the immunization.

It also could have been triggered by something in your (then) new work environment.

Definitely, if you can, make an appointment with an immunologist/allergist and get some testing done. Then you can start avoiding things you are allergic to and get some treatment to improve your quality of life!

Whew, that was long. I hope something in here helps!!

Shyentist, thanks for that post! I just happened to look at this thread and your description of the allergic reaction really fits the rash I've had on my face for years but that has recently been spreading/flaring. I've blamed a number of different things in the past (gluten, birth control, vaccines, aster family flowers, etc.), and have finally come to the conclusion that it must be multiple things that can trigger it. I've resisted asking a doctor about it because the one doctor that looked at it was just going to give me cortisone cream without looking for the cause. But it sounds like maybe the cortisone cream could be useful for breaking the cycle of inflammation. It might be time to quit experimenting on myself to remove allergens and get some western medical help .

Thanks, Shyentist and CMI for the replies! I do think you are right in that there are multiple triggers. I have come to the conclusion that I just may never find out what exactly triggered my allergies, but maybe I just reached a point of chemical overload and my body just couldn't take it anymore!

Right now I'm experimenting with cutting out makeup (and slowly starting to get used to what nature intended me to look like...haha!), cutting way back on sugar and high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, and attempting to eat more veggies. I'm eating some milder fruits, but I have noticed that citrus tends to make my lips swell a little so I think that irritates it. I've also stopped using my face cream and lip balm because I'm not sure if those are just making it worse. The allergy on my face has pretty much gone away, although it's still a little dry on the outside of my lips. I used vaseline on it yesterday and it looks a lot better today.

I know I shouldn't beat myself up about it but I just wish I could figure it out. @CMI, Every few months or so, I also come up with a new theory about where it all came from. I guess this month, it's the vaccine. I have suspected my years on birth control, the tap water, toothpaste, diet sodas, you name it, I've looked into it. In the end, I think it's probably a combination of all of it. I might have to cut a lot stuff out for good and just live with it.

FWIW, I have decided that at his 6 month appt, I am going to go ahead and get him the DTaP. I'm just too paranoid about bringing him anywhere in public. I went shopping yesterday and I felt like I was dodging bullets every time I heard someone cough. And although he's not in daycare, he is exposed to other kids (cousins who do attend daycare, etc.). I feel like the more research I do on vaccines, the more I feel like there isn't really a right answer out there. I just need to go with my gut. I know I don't want him to have all of them, and definitely not all of them at the same time, but I'm more open to them now.

I really appreciate all of the responses here. If anyone has any ideas as to what I could do to help my skin allergies, I'm all ears! I'll try anything at this point!!

ETA, I did make an appt with a dermatologist a month ago. Only one more month until my appointment. Apparently they are pretty booked up! Could they do an allergy test, too or do I specifically need to see an allergist?

@Shyentist....oh yeah, the rough fabric really gets to me now, too! I can't even look at acrylic sweaters without breaking out into a rash!
