what did you dress your newborn in?

I am trying to figure out the woolies thing for a newborn. Woolie sizing has me a bit baffled, add that to my general quantity confusion, I just down right need some advise.

So what did you dress your newborn in (in winter) to keep them warm and cozy? How many did you need???

we had one set of woolies, that we only used when we would be outside.

indoors, i had him in a long sleeved (and legged) cotton underlayer, and then another overlayer in either cotton or denim (or both--cotton top, denim overalls). my guy was long and skinny, though, do he was wearing 3 mo stuff pretty early.

when preparing to go out, i would put him in woolies, then his overlayer outfit, and then his snow suit (with cotton hat under that).

once he was mobile, i had a waterproof snowsuit, so he could play in the snow without getting wet.

now he has rain gear (which is lined), and we didn't use woolies this year because it wasn't that cold (to us), but next year, we are planning to see some snow, so we will put him in woolies then.

Have you seen this article on Christopherus about dressing a Waldorf baby? There are some other great baby articles there too.

We've kept things super simple and affordable with our spring babe. I bought 6 each of cotton gowns and short sleeve t's for spring/summer and long sleeve t's for winter. (just white blanks from dharmatrading) I've knit wool longies, sweaters, socks and pilot caps. I also knit a super thick sweater to use as a coat (since I wear him inside my coat, that's all he'll need). And that's the sum total of our baby wardrobe - comfy and warm and easy.

I also love letting my baby look like a BABY and not like a miniature teenager, but that's just my own preference (really, how many cargo pockets does a baby need on his pants?)

I loved the little wool undershirts, they are great for staying warm even if they drool a bit or sppit up. They don't need to be washed often so 2-3 is enough. We mostly used longies on the bottom, or a wool soaker inside a cotton sleeper.

I liked to dress them in 100% cotton (preferable organic whenever possible) long sleeve T-shirts or Kimono wrap tops, with wool longies pants over their cloth diaper. http://www.katequinnorganics.com/esh...category_id=81

Or, one-piece cotton rompers (so roomy and comfy!)

I LOVE Hannah Andersson baby Zippers for little ones for both day and night wear. Their organic cotton and stretchy over even bulky cloth diapers (if you're going that route).

These little booties:

And little wool or cotton pilot caps. A "biggie" in Waldorf philosophy--keeping the head warm.

Ebay is a great resource for more affordable prices on all these items.

My son was 6-12 mos during the autumn/winter last year. I knit him a couple of pairs of wool longies, but did not knit him any socks. I will do that this year. I also bought a sewing machine last September and began making wool pants for him out of thrifted sweaters. I also knit him a vest to keep his core warm. We always wrapped him in a wool blanket when transporting him outside. For his head outdoors, I knit a hood out of alpaca and for his hands, double thick mitts also with alpaca. For his head indoors, I just used a light cap a friend had blessed us with. She gave him a cashmere set of sweater, footed pants and a cap.

This year, I'll be making him some cashmere t-'s from thrifted sweaters and have made him a cashmere romper a la thrifted sweater. On Monday, I found 2 more sweaters that will work for that. I also made leather robeez style slippers and lined them with cashmere for him to wear in the house now that the wood floors are starting to feel quite cool. And I'll be knitting up more longies.
