I've read what LLL has to say about it... but would you? Have you? My DS is 17 months and there is no end to our nursing relationship in sight. I got a gift cert for a tattoo for my birthday last year, when DS was really tiny. I still have not used it as I am still nervous. But I am thinking that by the time he is ready to ween we will almost certainly have another lo in the works. Is it a super bad idea?

Maybe I didn't do enough research because I got my last tattoo WHILE breastfeeding my toddler. The tattoo guy was a bit uncomfortable with it - the nursing, not the possible health implications - but he got over it really fast when my DD unlatched and flashed my whole boob at him!

Absolutely. Provided you are being tattooed at a clean, reputable studio that can provide proof of instrument sterility- indicators and spore tests or use a completely disposable set-up (most artists here do now). Getting a tattoo is no more traumatic to your body than scraping your knee.

The only real risks (since the ink CANNOT pass into your milk) are risks of infection which are pretty much eliminated if the store follows good guidelines for sanitising everything. If everything comes out of a sealed package in front of you, they use a lot of saran wrap on surfaces, and they wipe an ungodly amount of surface down afterward (my artist sprays the entire work station, even the entire chair, and wipes it down, it really looks excessive which is what you want), then you're probably pretty good. Another big thing for me is, if they do piercings, I ask them what they recommend for cleaning tongue piercings. If they say listerine (in other words, if they don't specifically say NON-ALCOHOLIC mouthwash), then I wouldn't trust them for ANYTHING. If they don't know that, then who knows WHAT they don't know. That tends to knock a lot of places out of the running pretty quick, and then I just ask a bunch of questions on how they sanitise everything. I would also recommend looking for reviews.
