How's my CD shopping list?

I'm getting ready to buy my starter cloth diaper stash for our very first baby. I am super excited about CD'ing! We are going to use sposies for the first couple of weeks, just to help us ease into this huge change of caring for a baby...and to help DH be a bit less intimidated by changing dipes!
We are on a very limited budget, so our goal is to use the most cost effective, long-lasting system possible. This means we are planning to stick mainly with prefolds and covers, although I may splurge on a fitted dipe or two when/if I can. I'm not really interested in AIO's at all. Also, I can crochet and plan to make some wool soakers over time, as I learn how they are sized to fit baby. Here's my shopping list so far:

24-36 Infant size Prefolds
3 snappis
1 Prorap Newborn
1 Prorap Small
1 Thirsties X-Small
1 Bummis Whisper Wrap Small
1 Thirsties Duo size 1
1 wet bag for diaper bag
Diaper Pail

Do I have enough covers on my list? Like I said, I can always make some soakers to supplement...but not sure how many covers I really need total.

I personally would only get about 12 infant small prefolds and get 12 in a bigger size if you are concerned about price, you can always fold them smaller! But lots of people seem to think that 24 isn't too many. I think with 24 you could def go 2++ days between washing, but you'd need more covers to do that. I think I started with 18 prefolds (or fewer?) a doz small ones and 6 big ones. I have since purchased another 6 or so big ones and I really like doing the 3-fold (or two fold in the case of a small prefold) and putting it in a cover. My husband likes it too, and there's really very little learning curve (other than how to position each cover best) so with something like that you might not need sposies. I like the thirsties duo covers (with velcro) or bummies (any) for that.

If you do get more covers, get some that will last for a while like the thirsties duo or bummies sm. My daughter is just barely fitting both of those at 3 months and 15lbs and we are purchasing mediums and thirsties sz 2 now. She can only use the smaller covers with her fitteds. We have lasted till now with only 1 snappy but like I said we usually trifolded after we discovered how easy that was!

I would get a second wet bag so you have one in the pail and one in the wash, and if it's cheaper for you to get a garbage can do that, we found one at walmart for half the price of what we would have paid for an actual diaper pail.

oh, I didn't notice wipes. I use those cheap baby washcloths with water but you can buy or make your own, lots of ideas on here!

looking at your covers again, I'd prob focus more on getting very adjustable smalls instead of the NB/XS as those might not last long unless you expect a small baby. In my experience the thirsties 2 fit small and are great, but my DD was a 9lb3oz 22" baby.

I think I started with 6-8 covers but mine are all the ones that last till about 15lbs+.

Thanks for the reply! Yes, I do have a bunch of cloth wipes already...forgot to mention that. I guess you're right about getting another wet bag in case one is in the wash. And when I say "diaper pail" I do mean some kind of trash can, actually. We have 3 cats and 1 dog, so I will be getting something with a locking lid to keep out curious critters.

So, perhaps I should get 24 infant sized (up to 15 lb) prefolds, then 12 in the next size up? I want to try a variety of covers to see what brand I prefer. But I am leaning towards getting more of the ones that go up to 15 lbs, rather than 12. I don't expect to have a very big baby, but I could be surprised!

I would get 24 infant sized prefolds and 12 of the next size up. I found that when washing every other day I always needed a few more than 24 to use while laundry was washing.

ya, something like that! unless it's really difficult for you to get them, I'd even get 12 in the smaller size, 12 in the next and pick up more smaller ones that first week if you need to.
I like to use a variety of covers and dipes myself, and have expanded my selection a lot more than I thought I would! I kind of figure that I will eventually have two in diapers at the same time, so it's okay if I end up with like 50 diapers

Don't forget some cloth diaper friendly detergent to wash them in.

Check! I actually make my own detergent and have already whipped up a batch of cloth/baby clothes friendly powdered cleanser!

I prefer more than 5 covers. Lots of people make do with 5 or less, but I like washing them in between newborn poo leaks if I can.
