DS Rushing through work..says hes bored

My DS is in 1st grade, he's been bringing home class work that is rushed through, therefore missing answers. Like he completely skips them. Yesterday he brought a math test home with a teachers note "careful" on the skipped question. It was the only 1 he missed, and he ended up with a 97% instead of a 100%..now if he woulda missed the question no big deal, but he didn't even see the question because he was trying to get it done quickly. When he pays attention to the work, he gets all S+. The only thing I can see is his handwriting skills are still not great, but more because of capatilization and punctuation than spelling errors. His actual writing itself is very much typical of a 1st grader (backwards numbers etc)

He keeps telling me he's bored and his teacher had to move him to a different spot because he was reading over her shoulder during story time (he reads on a 3rd grade level and absolutely HATES to be read to) and the school library wont let him take out anything that is a more challenging read. This week he brought home a book that was one of the "a is for apple" books because as a 1st grader he's only allowed the "easy" section. He also said that he is in the purple reading group with 2 other kids, and the 3 of them each pick a book from the classroom library and sit quietly and read, and its really boring.

Now my thinking is that he really should be in 2nd grade, he's 7 and we homeschooled a yr..when we enrolled in ps last yr they didn't give me a choice and put him in K, and we moved back to Ohio since he was already in K he got stuck there..so in essence he had 2 yrs of K. 1 homeschooled and 1 in ps and hes bored to tears because he's been through all the "review material" twice now. I have told him that it will get more challenging as the year goes on. But we are now at mid 1st quarter and hes just as bored as day 1 and now hes just rushing through to get it done.

Any ideas on getting him to chillax? Should I talk to his teacher?

Yes, talk to his teacher. I've had to do this with everyone of my son's teachers. He gets bored in class, rushes through his work (and ends up with bad grades) and he ends up talking alot and being disruptive. Once they've let him move ahead to his actual level and have to work a little bit, he does great.

Thats exactly what he did when we homeschooled! My DD is sn, and it was contstant interruptions with him..last year in ps K his teacher loved him, he was her helper and helped the other kids. This year I am looking at the work he's bringing home and progress-book add in the bored comments and I am wondering if hes just needs more of a challenge or what since K is much more "fun & games" then 1st
