Hello, everyone.
It has been long enough since I was last on here that I thought I should re-introduce myself and maybe even ask a question or two.
My name is Melissa, and I am currently in south Mississippi. I am married, have a two year old son, and am 12 weeks pregnant with our second child. I am only semi-crunchy, but I find that I am getting "crunchier" as time moves onward. Now that I am back down here with my family, it feels even more possible to raise my children the way I want without any unwanted interference, and I have actual encouragement from my mother who came from an old farming family with strong Native American roots. I can tell you, it was amazing moving from where my son was born where everyone looked at me like I was an idiot for breastfeeding to moving back down here where my mom tells stories of how she "breastfed" her baby dolls when she was little, as did most of the other kids in her neighborhood.
I graduated from college with a degree in game art and design, but there's not much work to be found in this field in our area, so I'm looking at going back to school. I would love to be a doula and/or a midwife, but I have no idea how to get to that point. I have seriously considered getting a nursing degree so I can be a certified nurse midwife, but that advanced degree isn't available in my state. I had settled on the idea of being an ob/gyn, but there are so many things I don't want to do (circumcisions, elective c-sections, vaccinating myself against the flu every 6 months...) that I don't think that is really feasible either. Of course, if anyone has any suggestions, let me know or just tell me where to look on here, please.
Thank you for letting me take up some of your time. I look forward to trying to be part of this community again.
