Feeling sick

Thread Starter
A neighbor was discussing her "busy rotation" in the nursery today. She did 5 circs. I feel sick seeing her now. She is a 2nd year resident, so, as stated on here many times, people aren't getting a skilled surgeon to cosmetically alter their newborns' penises. If this is cosmetic, shouldn't people at least get a real surgeon. Do they not even care how inexperinced the person cutting their sons is?

I know from past experience that in larger hospitals, many circs are performed by residents/students.

Also, so many times I've seen people come deliver and they choose the "on-call pediatrician" for their baby & his circ. This is most likely a doctor they've never met before delivery, never researched or interviewed, know nothing about, and yet they choose this stranger to perform surgery on their kid. I can't imagine letting a stranger operate on my child unless it was a life or death emergency.

When DS was 6 days old, he needed to have his tongue tie corrected. He was 5 1/2 lbs and nursing with the tongue tie was very inefficient and exhausting. The first ENT Dr that was recommended to us by the lactation consultant at the hospital was not part of our insurance plan, so our pediatrician suggested an alternative one. We did a bunch of research on him, before we went to him for a consult.

Of course, tongue tie clipping is a much much simpler surgery than a circumcision is.

yeah, I guess it is just as crazy as flying in the airplain, trusting your life and the life of your kids to a stranger we know nothing about. we never reseaech about the pilot, we just blindly trust. when i was pg with my son i flew from Las Vegas to Phoenix (only 1.5 hour long flight). It was such a bad stressfull flight and landing (all because of the pilot, the plain was fine), i thought i'd miscary. when we finally landed a flight attendend appologized to everyone and told us that it was the pilots' first solo flight (um, not a minute too early...grrr) and that the guy has just got married . the point is, i guess there are a lot of situations when we just trust our bodies, our lifes to a stranger without giving it a second thought...

Assisting an intern perform her first circ on an inadequately anesthetized infant was the clincher for me in my journey to intactivism.
It was torture for that baby.
I will never forget his screams. And they used Lidocaine!

Did you look at her like she had 2 heads? I'm sure I'd have some sort of involuntary reaction if someone told me that they had *UA violation* a child.

I have read in so many articles, where the professional voice suggests to make sure you choose an experienced practitioner. ... grrrrr

How on earth is ANYONE ever supposed to become experienced if they don't do their first and second and third circumcision.... on SOMEONE'S only penis? Everyone has to start somewhere... it might as well be YOUR kid right? Can anyone make a good case for why it should be someone else's kids they practice on before they are good enough to be a so called "experienced practitioner" to circumcise your precious child?

VERY good point! It's not like they can practice on dogs (because then they'd go to prison for animal cruelty . CRAZY!

Yeah, if my neighbor casually mentioned something like that, I think I would be like, "You... you did ...WHAT?!!!!????" and then quite possibly vomit right then and there.

And then gather some materials from Doctors Opposing Circumcision for them, and let them know they can opt out of surgery that they find clashes with their strong ethical values.

Good luck, living near someone who you now have to know that about. I bet it's hard to see her without picturing it... ugh.
