We co-sleep and still nurse to sleep, but for the past 6 months, I had a night light on in our room so that I could see our DS when necessary.
However, he would usually end up wanting to play in bed after nursing because he had enough light in the room to see.
It just dawned on me to turn off the night light 3 weeks ago to see if that would make a difference. It did. He now nurses and goes to sleep much more quickly, without playing, since he can't see anything. And, I think the darker room signals to him that it's time for bed.
There is still some ambient light from the alarm clock (which I moved to my side of the bed finally). When I need to see him when he wakes up crying, I use a small mag light and use my finger to let just enough light through.
Just thought I'd pass on what worked for us!
