Ishiguro is British and "learnt" is acceptable British usage, so you may have to give him that one.
I don't specifically recall grammar issues, but if you are questioning the quality of the narrator's education, and her emotional, psychological and spiritual development, that's
very interesting.....

ETA: I know what you mean about "learnt", btw. I feel the same way about "whilst".
