Name question regarding movie-relatedness (lol)

Okay so I really like the name:

Adrienne (and then Adelle as the middle name)

DH likes it but is concerned that every time we tell people her name they will shout her name "Adriiiieennnne" loudly in some weird Sylvester Stalone voice because of the movie Rocky.

What do you think?

LOL, I'm still going to go with the name no matter what you say, but I was curious...do you think people will really do that?! I'm actually semi-concerned that if someone did, it might scare the baby!

I doubt people will do it when she's a baby, maybe when she's older. Most people know better than to shout around a baby, even if they think they're being funny.
FWIW I think its pretty!

I think it's pretty. I have a Stella, and apparently people like to shout this name too! But it hasn't happened yet. I think most people are more considerate than that.

some might but I woldn't be too concerned with it

Thanks gals

I think it's a pretty name too We don't even know if we are having a boy or a girl, but we are trying to narrow down our names for each (and I *feel* like i'm having a girl).

i think Rocky is pretty old movie to many folks and that the association has faded with time, if the movie had been made in the last 10 years it might be different,
i dont think it will be a big issue.
once she is older her friends will all be folks that grew up way after the movie was big

I didn't know the association (and I'm of the generation). The current generation of college students doesn't know the film. I mean, some might, but most young people won't know too much about it.

My IL's would... but that's their quirky sense of humor (that I still don't get). FWIW, I have a friend named Adrienne, who does not seem to have been traumatized even though she grew up in the era where the movie was popular.

I've seen Rocky, but I wouldn't have thought about the association without it being pointed out. (Stella does make me think of A Streetcar Named Desire, but not in a negative way, and it wouldn't inspire me to stand underneath a window yelling.)

Will someone probably being it up at some point? Probably, but I can't imagine it being that big a deal. Just don't name your kid Kahn.

I'm of the Rocky generation and I find that association to be a real stretch. I mean, you'd have to really reach. The movie is old and besides, Adrienne is a classic name. If it were a name made up for the movie, then yeah. But it's not like you're naming her Yoda. The name was there long before Rocky and wasn't popularized by it.

I didn't even know that name was from Rocky until someone brought it up online. Our kids probably won't even know who Rocky is (they'll probably think of Rocky and Bullwinkle or something)!

FWIW, the first thing the name Adrienne makes me think of is the feminist poet/writer Adrienne Rich.

My son's name is Luke. He was named for TWO movies, Star Wars and Cool Hand Luke. He gets called Skywalker all the time, though he actually prefers Anakin. Since he's a Star Wars geek like his father, he thinks nothing of it. The first Rocky is an Oscar-winning movie, she could be called far worse.

Yes, some people will do that. But not until she is older, or at least not in front of her until then.

However... anyone who does will likely not be anyone important to her.

FWIW my real name has 2 or 3 song references. I get it a lot from strangers. Almost never from people that mean anything to me... Mostly because the songs came out before I was born.

It does get annoying at times but is not the worst reference in the world, either my songs or that movie...
I didn't get the reference, never saw the movie. Anyway, even if the name's in the movie, it wasn't invented for the movie, so it's not uber-specific like Wendy or something.

i think that people will find anything to make an association with. People ask if my DD was named after a movie, and it's a family name.

I don't think anyone of her generation would do it, and I think the people that would remember the connection would be too mature to do it (I would hope) I mean I am 40, the movie came out when I was 5, so anyone else would have to be older. I can't imagine a 50 year old yelling "adriennnne" around her as a baby. I wouldn't think of it unless someone said after saying her name "you know we named her after the girl in Rocky"

Actually, Adrienne made me think of Adrianne Curry - that model girl who married Peter Brady and had a ton of reality shows. I totally forgot about the Rocky aspect (and DH loves Rocky, and we're 28 so yeah...)

DD#1 (Fiona) IS named for a character in a movie ... but not that movie. I'd never even SEEN Shrek and had no idea there was a Fiona in it when we picked dd#1's name. It's the name of the little girl in The Secret of Roan Inish.

We get asked nearly every single time whether we named her after Shrek's wife.

I've known tons of women named Adrienne. It's not an uncommon name, so I don't understand your husband's concern.
Nah, I've had friends with that name and it hardly ever pops the whole Rocky thing into my head. I'm 30. I think it's not THAT obvious and exclusive of an association. Not like, say, naming your kid Ebenezer and everyone thinking of Scrooge. It's like Stella-- yeah, you CAN think of that movie reference, but most people won't. (Stella always makes me think, randomly, of Great Expectations. So you can't control all associations people have-- just pick the name YOU like).
