Newborn and toddler latch issues

My newborn dd (born 9/14) has slight latch and sleepy baby issues. She often isn't opening her mouth very wide and it takes quite a while to get a good latch. When she finally latches it is fine but it often takes a long time to get her to latch. It gets really annoying at night time and it is going to make it impossible to NIP because it isn't discreet when it takes so long to latch. Sometimes she gets sleepy and doesn't finish a feeding. Other times it comes at her really fast and she has a little trouble with that.

My ds who is almost 2 is only nursing once a day at bedtime but it hurts when he nurses. It hurt during my pregnancy but I thought it was all pregnnacy related and the fact that I don't think I had any milk towards the end. I guess his latch isn't perfect or the suction is stronger but it hurts when he nurses still and it doesn't when my dd nurses. It doesn't look like anything is wrong with his latch but it feels like it.

Is there anything I can do to make latching my dd easier or to improve the pain I get when nursing my ds.

You can do breast compressions to re-stimulate your baby so that she takes more milk at the breast, make sure that you aren't too hot - especially in bed at night max is between 18 and 20°C. Breast sensitivity can still be quite strong when nursing a toddler and a newborn with all those hormones running around your body, ask your toddler to correct his latch until you feel better - they normally are very willing to help out, also for your baby try to get the toddler to nurse at the same time so that his nursing stimulates a let down and in turn will keep baby awake - get the baby well latched on before asking the toddler to join in.

good luck - you're doing a great job - hang in there and it will get better.
