We are building our cob home and up till now on our land I go to the laundry mat then bring it all home to hang on the line to dry. Last winter I used the dryer at the laundry mat.. We are putting in an energy efficient front loader and I keep hoping we can do without a dryer. The only issue for us with drying inside is our walls themselves will take a year to fully dry out so I am not too keen on adding more moisture AND we also have a big family so lots of laundry! Baby number 5 due in 2 months.. I am wondering how others do without a dryer and if it is realistic for us to not have one? Big reason for not wanting one is the power they suck!

We haven't had a dryer for 3 years! It is difficult sometimes when the weather is wet for days and I start running out of clean clothes, but that is pretty rare. I think it would depend on where you live. We live in Denver so it is a fairly dry climate, and although we do get large amounts of snowfall, we very rarely go more than a couple days without sunshine.
It does take longer in the cooler temperatures for my laundry to dry on the line, but as long as it is above freezing and not raining/snowing I hang it up and it dries eventually!
HTH!

We do own a dryer but we only use it for emergency situations (like the previous poster mentioned). During "diaper times" in our household the dryer ran more often.
From my experience, the outside temperature isn't really the problem. We now live in a climate with high humidity - during summer, I sometimes had to get the laundry stand inside (air condition!) to get the towels dry even though it was almost 40°C outside!
On the other hand, it was no problem to hang-dry laundry in Michigan at only around 10°C but sunny and with a nice breeze.
I think it's great that you want to avoid the dryer but I'd still suggest "not to kill yourself". I'm pretty sure our great-grandmothers would have loved to have one in certain weather conditions...
