Grunting Sleeping Baby!

Hi!
I am new here, and so is my little boy...3 weeks old!
I am writing because Adric has a strange sleeping habit. When I put him down to sleep next to me (he sleeps in a bassinet beside my bed), he will often grunt, snort, make faces, and roll around while he is sleeping. This contrasts with the way that he sleeps peacefully and quietly during the day, or when he is not next to me.
I can tell he is not awake; if he cried--or even opened his eyes--I would pick him up at once because I don't believe in crying it out. I just don't know if this sleeping pattern is normal, if I should try to wake him up and then get him to sleep more quietly or something. It's just hard because this really only happens when I am trying to get a couple hours of sleep at night or something. I am worried about this grunting sleeper please let me know if you have had a similar experience or what it might be all about.

They all do that. It's bizarre, isn't it? I want to say that Sam outgrew it by about seven or eight weeks.

Yep, DD did that too. We were shocked at how loud she was! We called her dino-baby I think it was about 2 months when it stopped...

Ugh, yeah. Mine is 10 weeks and he makes so much noise that DP rolls over and presses his pillow over his ears. I'm not getting much sleep at the moment either because either he's nursing and being very wiggly about it or he's making so much noise while sleeping. Ah well. Soon enough he'll be asking for the keys to the car.

My 3-week old boy is doing this, too. I figured it was just a little gas. If he doesn't wake up and/or cry, I just let him be.

My 2 week old does this. He's also started to "yell" at me during a nursing. LOL I think it's funny!

Congrats on your new baby!

We were also surprised how loud and grunty our baby was. I had no idea little babies could make such noises! Ours is now 4 m.o. and still pretty grunty, and we have lots of laughs about it.

As long as you can tolerate it, it's just normal and no biggie. But I know some folks find they can't sleep and their baby sleeps better in his or her own space so they use a co-sleeper crib attached to the bed, or even the crib separate or in a different room. I would say if after some time it is really hard for you all to sleep, maybe consider the crib. It doesn't mean you're not practising AP if you use a crib if that helps everyone get a better night's rest. GL!

Yep...my 4 week old grunts a lot! It usually means that she's getting ready to wake up. She can grunt up to 30-45 min before she opens her eyes. Also, it usually means she's going to poop when she wakes up! And I've tried to pick her up and nurse her when she's in this stage and she won't! She won't open her mouth....she's still really asleep!

DD did that when she was tiny too. Then one day, I realised she hadn't done it for a while. I kinda missed it!
