We found a wish book really started to help at that age - my son would draw or cut out a picture and make a page for that thing. The time together spent on it went a long way.

However I also think the high level of frustration and obsession is a part of being three.

Wow, that is a really cool plane! I can see why he loved it so. My DD was like that when she was younger. Like the PP I would write it down on her wish list. It's hard, but it does get better.
