If you buy the supplies yourself instead of getting a kit? And how do you know what to buy and how much of it? I've never made one but am slowly feeling like I need to!

I've been wondering the same thing. I think since it's my first, I'm gonna get some pantyhose and socks from the $ store and experiment. I have a ton of wool for hair and lots of fabric. I also read somewhere that you can use cotton jersey for the head and body.

Usually "stockinette refers to the knit tubing that is used for the inner head the first layer covering the wool. The second layer is the skin tone knit- cotton interlock. This company, Miriad, is calling this skin tone knit "stockinette" also, which is confusing. Some times this skin tone knit is tubular knit as well but has a smooth surface compared to the stockinette, which is ribbed.

Here is a kit from a seller with a photo of all the supplies. You can see the 2" wide tubular gauze (similar to stockinette) and the skin tone knit yardage-

I just shared this link on a different post, but here it is again: http://www.flickr.com/photos/2918458...th/3508162491/
This is a great photo tutorial for making a doll. It shows you all the materials you will need in the second photo. I just used it to make my first doll.

That Flikr tutorial is great! I don't exactly understand the need for the second string, the one called the chin strap. What does it do? I understand the eye one though.

Hmmm, I'm not sure myself. Maybe it gives some extra definition around the face/cheeks?

There was some post about somebody's Dollar Store Waldorf Doll. The hardest thing to find, in my opinion, is good skin colored cotton knit fabric. Oh here is the link for the doll: http://dollarstorecrafts.com/2008/11...r-store-style/

It gives shape to the back of the head.
