can't get my diet on the right track

Thread Starter
Hi,
I'm 8-9 weeks pregnant, and all i want to eat is junk. i buy fruit and veggies and it dies in the fridge. i don't have aversions to anything, and i'll have a bite or 2 when cutting up fruit for ds, but i just can't bring myself to eat round, healthy meals, like i KNOW i need to, and for snacks when i should be having fruit, i have junk.
I work at a restaurant, and i have no self control when i'm there. i just eat fries and junk all night.

I guess i'm looking for some advice, or perhaps an accountability thread? Anyone interested?

Well I'm not sure how it would work with eating at work but I just refused to buy any more junk. If its not available, its not an option. Instead I stocked the house with fresh foods and yogurt (cause you can't eat fruit *all* the time).

This is my second pregnancy, I can't explain it, but I eat junk while I am pregnant. I don't any other time, in fact for 3 years I ate no fast food, no fried food, never ate out, made all foods from scratch at home. I get pregnant and I want milkshakes, chocolate and fast food.

I don't know what to tell you. It's not an aversion anymore, it's maybe a need to seek comfort food? If I eat a salad now, it has to be covered in blue cheese dressing. I haven't eaten a salad like that since I was like 20 - so like 20 years ago??

I don't have advice for you, I try to eat healthy when the mood strikes, but yeah, so turned off by fruit and veggies now, I can't explain it.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one. All I want is trail mix and lemon sorbet. I know I CANNOT have sugar. I'm insulin-resistant, and I'd been off it for so long now I didn't really crave it. Until I got pregnant and now I'm dying for some every day. It's insane. I think it's because I'm so darned exhausted and I feel like I need a quick energy pick me up. I'm hoping it'll be better in a few weeks.

I think this is hardest to deal with in the first trimester, so be gentle with yourself. For me, I was also using sugar to get myself through being super tired. I've indulged a lot in this pregnancy, but just decided two weeks ago (at 30 weeks) to take a 10 week no sugar pledge. I have a very hard time being moderate, but it's easier for me to just have none--then I think about it less and don't have to make the choice all over again every single time I'm faced with some treat. So far it's going great. My cravings are less, and it's forcing me to realize that I'm actually hungry and need to make a protein/complex carb snack instead of just having a cookie. We'll see if I make it for the whole 10 weeks, but I figure even if I have the occasional treat, it will be way less than it was before.

i'm about 11 weeks and i am finally getting over my junk phase and getting back to eating fruits and veggies, I'll be the first to admit I let a lot my garden go this past month because i could not bear to go out there and look at the veggies that some may have been over ripe or have bugs in it. Yuck. I have been eating way more fruit and veggies this past week, and trying to let go of that greasy carby craving. Just give your body time, I think if you are craving greasy carby foods that probably means that your body is in need of fat and carbs for energy. But for me even the nice whole wheat toast sounded yucky, but it should get better and don't be too hard on yourself it will pass.

There is something to be said about craving foods that are high in fat while pregnant. Your body needs more fat while you're pregnant than any other time. Bacon dipped in guac? Go for it! living on fried eggs all day? Do it! It's gotta be better for you than eating processed refined carbs. I have my own opinion about all this, but if anyone is interested, go to www.westonaprice.org for more information. It totally debunks this "low fat" nation we live in. Sugar on the otherhand, yeah..might want to control ourselves a bit more in that!
