but really i'm having trouble finding any real information on that whole process
I know for my daughter they recommended 50,000 iu weekly for 8 weeks (standard treatment). I think she was 26 pounds at the time. I know she was deficient because she was tested, but I can't imagine she was any lower than an adult since she actually played outside. I would think it would take a ton to actually overdose over time.

wow that does sound like a lot for a child; i really wish people could get their stories straight and come up with a common Upper Limit amount...I have read numerous studies where they were testing people with 10,000 daily with no adverse effects (short term) and numerous Dr's themselves claimed to be on thousands daily and i had read somewhere that you were more likely to drown in the dessert then to overdose on vit D but again that's just one opinion...

Google Vitamin D Counsel and you will get lots of information.

After my pregnancy with DS, I have had a cavity at EVERY dental appointment (after 20 years of no cavities). When DS was 15 months old, he developed Early Childhood Caries (tooth decay, aka bottle rot, although he never had a bottle!). We both got tested - was 25, I was 32. The lowest "normal" level is 30, but optimal is 50-75.

Since then, I take 4-5000 iu about 5 days a week, even in pregnancy. DS takes 1000iu about 3 days a week (both using Carlson's d-drops). We supplememnted a bit less in Jun/Jul/Aug when we were outside a lot. We haven't been retested, but his teeth are much better. I am still having problems, but not as bad as before.

Interesting, my DD has dental decay at 3 1/2 years, but she didn't eat until she was 2 1/2 -3 (long story) and never had a bottle or juice or anything until then. She obviously was low since they did the therapy on her. Does it prevent decay from causing further damage or reverse any damage? Because now they want monthly flouride treatments on her. I should start her back up again on the drops.

We did fluoride varnish (actually an iodine wash followed by the fluoride) every 2-3 months on the teeth with decay, and we use a fluoride toothpaste. His decay has basically halted, so we no longer varnish. We live in an area without fluoridated tap water, and we don't supplement with it. I do believe the Vit. D is helping. If you search the dental forum, you'll see lots of posts about vit. D& Vit. A supplementation.

Thanks, we have no fluoridated water, and DD swallows the fluoride toothpaste even at 3 1/2, and has thrown up every time I use it. I'll head over there.

How much toothpaste do you use? 'cause it should be just a bit, larger than a grain of rice, but smaller than a pea. If you don't already, try one of the more natural kinds, like Tom's for Kids or Spry.

Very small amount, probably that if not less, I barely smeared it on the tips, there were a few dots, that is it. They gave me a prescription strength and told me I needed to use that, so it was far more fluoride than a regular toothpaste.
