HELP - WWYD? - do I tell daycare that we had an exposure to lice?

my inital thought was yes!

but, and here's the but -

we were over a friend's house last friday and their 3 year old granddaughter had some interactions with my son. by interactions, i mean she leaned over to give him some kisses and gave him two brief hugs. keep in mind, she's 3, so all of the contact was only 30 seconds or less b/c she can't stay still for longer than that. she never touched heads with him, he didn't wear any of her clothes, etc.

they just called me about an hour ago to say that granddaughter had lice. so, he's been at daycare for almost two full days before i found any of this out.

i called his pediatrician and asked what they would recommend, and they said that i would be able to notice nits in his hair within a week and aksed if i had seen any. i haven't but i also haven't been looking closely, even though i washed his hair last night. they also said they usually feed for 24-48 hours before dropping off or trying to find a new host - which causes red spots / bites on his head. i'd also be able to see the louse if i moved his hair around.

there is no over the counter shampoo available for children as young as he is and you have to get rid of them the old fashioned way with a comb and picking the nits out. i intend to check him throughly when i get home.

but, now i'm struggling with what/if to say to daycare. i don't want to withhold information from the other parents and from daycare, but i also don't want to create a panic if it's not necessary. as i said, he's already been there a full day and the better part of today before i knew.

do i tell them to tell the other parents to watch for signs? do i wait and see if he develops any nits (which should be either a yes or no within the next day or so)?

WWYD?

There is an OTC shampoo for younger children, 2 months and up actually. It is Nix. I know because I just used it on my 1 year recently. This one actually kills the nits and the lice, you still should pick out all the nits but it isn't as critical as the other brands where you have to get every single one. And I wouldn't be able to count on being able to see the lice, my oldest had a severe infestation, it was bad, and I could only find 1 louse. The adults are quick and avoid light so they can be hard to find. Now in my family, my DD1 was the only one that we could find lice on but we all used Nix as a preventive on the other 4 members because it does kill the lice and eggs, we wanted to stop it from spreading.

This might not be a popular opinion but I most certainly would tell the daycare IF you guys did have lice, I would not say anything about being exposed because he might not get it. I read through tons of articles on lice and this was the one I liked the best. http://www.askdrsears.com/html/8/T082500.asp

Lice are probably easy to pick out on such a small head. Smothering the lice with mayo works very well; we went through several boxes of OTC meds on my 7-yr-old before finally trying the mayo.

I would tell the daycare, yes, and then let them decide what to tell parents. Lice are easiest to take care of if you catch them quickly.

can you describe what you did with the mayo? how long did you leave it on his head? how much did you use?

Yes, I would say something.

I'd tell them too and let them decide whether or not to tell parents.

The main thing is to pick out ALL of the nits and be vigilant about it. I used a flea comb to get them all out.

The mayo -- I covered my daughter's hair with gobs and gobs of mayo, then put a shower cap over it and kept it on her as long as we had time for, which was probably an hour or so. The mayo supposedly suffocates the lice as well as loosens the nits from their gluey grip on the hair so they are easier to comb out.

Tell them for sure! They can be on the look out and catch something before it becomes a problem. They may have to do a major clean out and knowing about it and being proactive will help them tremendously.

If they do have lice and it becomes a problem at the day care, they may have to close to everyone to clean everything out. But if they can monitor and check now, it may not get to that.

Tell them for sure.

just an update - i called and let them know.

what they do is have a teacher check the child for nits and if he has them i have to go pick him up. if he doesn't have any, they (and I) watch him for a week. it's now in their corner if / when they decide to tell other parents.

they also agreed with me & the Ped that the likelyhood of him getting the lice from her is small since they had such little interaction, but she thanked me for letting them know.

they just called me again to say they inspected him and didn't see anything - keeping my fingers crossed that it stays that way!

As a childcare provider, I'm glad you told them. I would want to know so that I could be super vigilant and extra carful about cleaning certain things.

lice don't like light. so unless your lo has lots of hair it is doubtful he could catch lice even if he wanted to.

i've always been able to get rid of lice with just combing with those fine tooth lice combs.

honestly, i would be more concerned about yourself and the other adults.
