Ouch!!

Thread Starter
almost 4mo dd has taken to clamping down on my nipple and pulling off very abruptly. over and over. I have shrieked, yelled, and darn near hit out of pure reflex.

she is teething a bit, but I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

HELP!!!

It really hurts when they do that.

My dd always laughed when I would shriek.

What worked for me was pulling her into my breast so it covered her nose. She would have to let go to breathe.

She REALLY hated that but it worked and she stopped biting.

Not fun!

My son did this a bit, and one thing that I read was that it is often most effective to suppress any "exciting" reaction as much as possible. Sometimes the little ones are just interested in how we react to them, so yelling could just lead to them doing this more.

I had also read that pulling them closer and blocking their nose helps to get them to stop biting in that moment, but I think it is most effective make sure you stop nursing for a few minutes or even longer. This way, the little being starts to associate biting with the end of their meal - I found this very helpful, so I hope it helps you a bit, too!

Best wishes!

Mine does this when she has a burp/is done eating/is distracted. Once I made nursing a little more 'business like' she stopped.

My dd did that if I remember correctly when she was 6 or 7 months old. I decided that if she did it again, it would be time to be done. I would say out loud (not that she necessarily could understand, just so I could be calm when she'd nibbled) "if you're going to nibble mommy, you're done nursing" and after a few times she stopped.
