They are killing the cats that are vaccinated also. I know this is cats but what if it were humans? Just goes to show vaccinations are not 100%

Panleuk outbreak in Everett, WA


The Everett Animal Shelter in Everett, WA is reporting a major Panleuk outbreak at the shelter.
They are euthanizing most of the cats in the shelter "to stop the outbreak". It is hard to accept the killing of older, vaccinated cats, but they are in an area hard hit by the economic conditions and are not set up for a large quarantine operation. They believe the virus came into the shelter on or about September 18.

Take extra care with fosters / new homes , etc. in central Snohomish County, WA.

Among the feline vaccines, FPV is pretty darn close. Mass euthanization as a response to outbreaks is more a sign of the very real problems of underfunding and overcrowding. Speaking as someone who pitches in with a local rescue group, I can tell you it's not always an easy gig.

Im pretty certain they would all have been vaccinated. Having volunteered for years at an animal rescue organization, the first thing they do when new shelter animals come in is to vaccinmate them or obtain records (from owners who have to give up their animals) to be sure they are up to date.

Yah, patient zero was a kitten in this case, so one has the issues of the eight-week threshold for first vaccination, presumably unknown maternal antibody status, and uncertain time for adult FPV vaccination to kick in in the rest of the uncertain-status population. It's still ultimately a failure to have the resources to institute a quarantine.

At a shelter here in Ontario, they recently put down almost all of the animals in the shelter due to an outbreak of ringworm. Also probably most likely due to funding shortages. It was heartbreaking and an outrage! And this was at an SPCA.
