You know those frilly, fancy salon places for little girls? Whoever invented those is PURE EVIL. We happened upon a new one in our local "shoppes" last week, and since then DD8 has been begging to go. She needed a cut anyway, so we went today. I figured it was only $5 more than our usual place, and it would save a few bucks on gas. Ha! $33 later... At least she loves her hair, and she was thrilled to pieces with the experience. She even got a free makeup application with their Monday special. I thought her head was going to explode with joy DD5 is begging to go now too. It will be a special treat that Daddy will do with her when DD8 and I go to see the Nutcracker. But whew! I made sure both girls know that this is a ONE-TIME THING!!!! I did take us back home for lunch instead of caving under the Starbucks/Chipotle/Jamba Juice triple whammy in the same "shoppes."

Short-term goals:
No-spend days: 3/20
Grocery budget: $99/500

Your post made me laugh out loud for two reasons, Melissa...

1. How you spelled shoppes and put it in quotes...that is funny stuff

2. The "shoppe" being in New Jersey...I can SO see a place like that thriving in my old neighborhood (we moved to Vermont from New Brunswick, NJ)

What is it with New Jersey and hair? I've never seen so many salons anywhere else in the country.

I'm glad your DD had a good time -- you would have spent that taking her to ChuckECheese or some other child-entertaining type place as well. At least you got a haircut out of it, right?

i just need to vent for a bit. my in-laws were visiting over the long weekend, 4 days in total. we had a great visit, i feel like a total ungrateful, spoiled b*tch right now. we keep on making this budget, and then not sticking to it because "something comes up." this weekend (mostly because i've been posting here) i was constantly keeping track of what we were spending, and trying to get out of spending as tactfully as i could. dh is pretty generous by nature, and tends to like to treat people when we go out (plus has a weird independence thing with his parents where he doesn't want them to do anything for him). but we can't afford to do that 4 days in a row when the inlaws are visiting. even splitting 50/50 would totally wreck our budget. so i was constantly trying to work the conversation around so dh wouldn't get a chance to whip out his credit card until his mom had a chance to offer to pay. ugh. i HATED it. and eating and staying in all 4 days wasn't a great option either, since they don't really like the kind of food i make.

we're visiting my parents next weekend, so it'll another couple days of trying not to bust the budget... at least my parents are more naturally frugal and my mom and i will cook together instead of going out.

5/15 no spend days
1/8 art/work days
2/4 eat-out days
unnecessary/unbudgeted spending

$260/$400 groceries
$123/$300 discretionary spending

1. groceries
2.
3. (blah. we just went out for a stroll to our art fair and got really hungry... the food we got wasn't even that good...)
4. library fines. is there anything worse than library fines? something that should be free except you were too lazy/disorganized BUT, i made a meal plan for the next week!
5. applied for two part-time jobs, and made my (hopefully) last ever diaper order today for $98.
6. $10 for movie and snack at moms and babies movie day, plus nearly half a tank of gas to drive across the city and back. i hate spending that money, but i guess i have to spend a little to see my friends and get out.
7. ! but i forgot that this weekend is thanksgiving and we're having family visit. there's gonna be a big grocery bill this weekend. there goes my food budget
8. ... went shopping for thanksgiving dinner supplies, and i didn't even get dessert yet.
9. , surprisingly, no other money spent today besides taking the inlaws to lunch.
10. nanny took us clothes shopping! i really needed some new winter clothes for dd, so that was a truly awesome gift. AND, since i was there, we managed to get out without anything sparkly, pink or otherwise impractical. dh spent $20 on groceries though.
11.
12.
13. almost a no-spend day! packed my lunch and ran important errands all day, then went to a play-date at a cafe... got a latte but the owner never charged me. we're there all the time and our group spends loads of money there, so i don't know if it was a treat or she just forgot. either way, i'll add it to my tally, and give it back in tips next time i'm there. $10 on city fees and lattes.

Really spendy day today. DD was in the hospital for day surgery (not serious...getting a googly eye out of her ear ) but this entailed over $50...daycare for DS, lunch, parking. I've been letting DH cover a lot of that type of thing on his personal "allowance" because I've been on mat leave but I got my first paycheque on Friday so I felt like I should get this one.

1: $4 Tim Hortons
2: $64 gas, bus tickets, snack

Eek! My DH is a bigamist and married to YOU!! That or we have freakishly similar DHs.... I DREAD seeing my ILs because it ends up costly for the very reasons you described. I've been getting better at suggesting cheap activities like museum visits, but eating out is the real bear!

Yesterday was a good day. We only spent $8 of our grocery budget on snacks for playgroup, a friend brought us full-sized samples of Oscillococcinum and Chestal Honey (two of each!), and we came home from our family gathering with a TON of leftover food because they left town this morning and my grandmother can't/won't eat it all. Today looks to be pretty good too--we don't need to do anything or go anywhere that involves spending money
