Bullying and Food Allergies

Hi Mom's of older kids with food allergies.

For those of you with kids in school, do you find this to be a real issue? DH and I are discussing schooling options for our 3 (almost 4) year old DS. I have issues with the safety of the school setting but also worry about the social aspect of it. If your child has not had issues, what, if anything did you do to make sure this didn't happen?

Has your child experienced any ill effects socially speaking? There was an article I ready today about it and it has me even more worried.

My 10yo is in public school. He's never had an issue with bullying, because of his food intolerances or anything else. One of his friends has a tree nut allergy. One of my friends has two kids with celiac (and type 1 diabetes), ages 14 and 12 and they've never had any bullying issues either. My son still gets asked over to people's houses, it just needs more planning (a lot of the time I send food with him, and his best friend's mother is super careful about it so I don't have to send food to their house anymore). But he's slept over there numerous times. And he has friends come to birthday parties and such. My 5yo just started kindergarten and so far, so good (though there seems to be a lot of food in her classroom - pretzels for rewards, counting pasta, etc.). I became room mother for her so that for special occasions I'll know there is safe food for her.
