At playgroup today, I was tying DD into my home-made mei tai, when little O's great-aunt (visiting just for the day), says "I had a similar one when mine were little. It was Chinese. Aren't they great, you can wear them comfortably for hours, comfortably for both you and the baby!".
I'd guess the woman was about 70-75, so it was probably back in the sixties, or slightly earlier she had her children.
I thought it was really cool!
