Parasites

Thread Starter
I'm currently EBF my 5mo DD, and we've just been diagnosed with an intestinal parasite. The detox specialist chiro (pro bf, very knowledgeable, and and nursed all her babies past 3yo) who is treating us has prescribed 6-7 drops of wormwood daily as the parasite killer in my all-herbal cleanse (both killers and eliminators). I'm worried about the wormwood, as it is a neurotoxin, and everything says not to give it to children.

However, I need this parasite OUT. I have lost so much weight that I am less than 100lb now and have no energy. My gut is currently intolerant to dairy, eggs, and oats, and the list of other intolerances makes me almost unable to eat without pain.

I've also seen what this parasite has done to my DS, and I do NOT want that to happen to my DD too. The doctor said that DD needs these cleansing herbs as well, so she doesn't suffer the same fate (and I agree).

Do I take the chiro's recommendation of wormwood as part of our treatment and accept that it is a tiny dose?

Anyone have thoughts to help?

wow. I don't know... I do know that wormwood is the ingredient that is in Absinthe that makes you hallucinate. Supposedly, Van Gogh chopped off his ear after Absinthe. : I do know there are different kinds of wormwood and there is a specific kind that is used in the spirit.

You should seek a second opinion at least IMHO

According to the Nursing Mother's Herbal (Sheila Humphrey, BSc, RN, IBCLC; 2003), wormwood is a category E - "Avoid. Toxic plant with no justifiable medical use." The notes list the essential oil of wormwood as toxic. In the text, it's mentioned as containing thujone, which is considered toxic.

I would definitely talk to an experienced herbalist before taking this treatment. There are many herbs and essential oils which are considered antiparasitic; I'd be surprised if a less toxic alternative could not be used instead.

By the way, human milk is antiparasitic (http://www.latrobe.edu.au/microbiology/table3.html for table of parasites it kills), so your DD should have some protection by being exclusively bf.
