bumbo seat?

I think that's what they are called?

Do any of you use one of these?

I think my son would probably love one at some point, since he's DYING to sit up and see the world, but I think morally I may be against them because he's not really ready to sit up yet, or he would.

Anyone have one, or have the same thoughts?

I have one. We do not use it all the time, but occasionally. I think anything is fine in moderation. If he can hold his head up, he should be ok as long as you are supervising him. Some people say that it's not good for the spine but a chiropracter I know said it is just fine for babies.

If your baby arches his back alot, the bumbo won't be very useful, because he'll be nearly flipping out of it. We barely used our loner because once he had head control he started doing the arching whenever we tried to "sit" him down, and now that he's done arching, he's sitting independently. I always had to sit right next to him for safety reasons with the bumbo, so then really, I'm not sure what the point was if he could just sit on my lap or something. See if a friend/relative has one you can borrow before blowing $35 on one.

Like every other tool I can think of-- Jumparoo, Jolly Jumper, Exersaucer, etc-- I think that they're just fine in moderation. Before Cecilia, 5.5 months, was sitting independently, we used it for max 10 minutes at a time.

I borrowed a Bumba seat and loved it! I wish I had had it months before as my daughter was already 5 mos when we tried it. I loved using it as a portable highchair, she could sit on the kitchen counter and "help". It was a great help for those times I needed to put her down but she wanted to be involved.

We received one as a gift. I think they are overpriced but we did use it a bit. Like a pp said, it worked well as a high chair on the table so DD could sit with us while we ate. Of course, it says not to use it on a table....but, we were sitting with her.

She didn't sit in it all that often otherwise but once in a while she did and seemed to enjoy sitting up "on her own."

There have been many incidences of babies flipping out of Bumbos (and bouncy seats- we very recently had a poster here who ended up with a baby with a skull fracture due to bouncy seat + countertop) placed on elevated surfaces.

It is NOT a good idea, no matter how near or attentive you are.

Yep, just this morning, ds got out of his bumbo. He can sit up, but likes being in it in the kitchen while i get stuff ready in the am. SO, luckily he was on the floor, but I looked away for a minute and he climbed/fell out. I had briefly thought about putting him on the counter to help me, but I am very glad I decided not to.

ALso, mine was a freebie, probably wouldnt spend alot on one. CHeck craigslist, I always see them on sale there.

I didn't use one but if so I'd use it in great moderation. Something just tells me thay forcing a body into sitting position before it's ready may not be a good idea. I think there is benefit to learning by tumbling over amd figuring out how to balance, as well as being able to get out of the position if it's not comfortable for spine or muscles.
That said, a laundry basket may be helpful, it's not as confining yet offers boundaries so baby doesn't constantlly fall over. Baby can still move around though.
It's just my opinion, not that it's necessarily correct

Yep, same here. Good thing I got it for free from a close friend of mine. I used it for bath time - some times - and when I needed to set W down for a brief moment and he wasn't sitting up unsupported just yet. But he did so shortly thereafter - right before he turned 6 months.

I also have a hand-me-down Bumbo. My 14 week old likes it. Today is the first day that he could control his head while sitting in it. He seemed to get tired of it in a few minutes, so it didn't last long. I expect he'll be in it more around 4 months.

I love them when they are appropiate.. thats helps right?
I don't like seeing tiny ones who have no muscle support to sit up even assisted being stuck in them for exessive times during the day.. I do love them one baby has some controll for small amounts when the moment is right.. I love when bbay can sit up but you'd like a bit extra..
DH loves that he can have DD out in the garden but shes up off the gravel floor (and putting said stuff in her mouth)
I love using it in the evening whiel I prep dinner I can put M right on the counter (totally in my watch and arms reach) and shes loves being right there helping..
I think its pricy not sure I'd I'd ever pay full price or that its worth the common $40ish price tag but I did find it a well liked item even if not used a LOT.

Find one to borrow or find one at a second hand store (the ones here are FILLED with them!)

I never used them, but my kids sat independently pretty early. A friend had one and her kid loved it until he figured out to climb out of it.

Okay, seriously.

Why do those of you who put your kid in a Bumbo or bouncy seat on the counter do it? Did you not read the thread where a poster's TWO MONTH OLD flipped off the counter in a bouncy seat and sustained a skull fracture, requiring a head CT? Or the thread where the poster's 5-month-old had to have 3 head CTs because of a skull fracture and a CPS case when she flew out of the bucket seat balanced on the shopping cart?

Those were not neglectful mommas. They were paying attention, were close to their babies, and their babies still were injured.

Yes, accidents happen. They happen to us all, but saying, "I'm close and paying attention" isn't going to do a darn thing when your kid flips off the counter.

eta: Okay, maybe that's a little harsh, but I'd rather hurt a stranger's feelings than read another thread about a baby with a skull fracture.

I agree. I get wanting to have baby in the kitchen with you while you cook or wash up etc. I do that now, with the bouncy seat, and I plan to do it with the bumbo. But why can't you just leave it on the floor? Baby is with you AND baby is safe.

if you have a chunky baby borrow one / try one at a store before you buy it. my son's thighs didn't fit right in it.

Thanks for the advice and yes, putting that seat or anything on a counter would completely freak me out. My DD fell out of her changing table once and it totally traumatized me and I was right there, so I'm extra paranoid about these things.

We had one and DS LOVED it!

My thoughts were that if we used it and he liked it, then it was fine to use. If he hated it, we would pass it on. I'm not morally opposed to the Bumbo chairs. It is something that can be over-used or misused but we weren't going to do that.

Maybe I skimmed too quickly, but I didn't see anyone say specifically that they put the Bumbo on a counter. I certainly don't do that, I put it on the floor.
