I just wanted to add our experience.
When we first requested an IEP evaluation (based on our awareness, his therapist, and teacher feedback), we didn't get very far. We were learning a lot about my stepson and the process at the time which made it all very difficult.
We really didn't get anywhere until we got a private neuropsych eval. It some ways to was frustrating, to pay money for an official statement of something we already knew. However, it is the thing that has opened doors and made the school move on things.
The school will likely, despite what the laws say, resist any and all accommodations (individual teachers aside). Interestingly, we had much more trouble getting an IEP in place in the two public schools my dss went to (one we left because they basically refused), but now he is in a charter school and they are much more proactive and don't treat us like we are the enemy.
