do I need to give her juice? - Page 2

i treat juice like i think most people drink soda- every once and a while, or if we go out to eat.

i rarely keep juice in the house.

we do drink green juices.. but thats only once and a while now that our juicer broke.

No juice needed.

We're not a no juice family, but we still only have it occasionally. Ds2 (7 months) has had a little bit of lemonade mixed with plenty of water, but I can't remember why we did that? He didn't like it though he loves water. My older kids (ages 5 and 3) get lemonade or juice maybe once a week at home.

I have juice around quite a bit actually. I'm diabetic I find it the most convient way to up a low if I need.. I carry capri sun juice boxes in my ar and diaper bag for ME and have orange juice in the hosue all the time .. My oldest get them on occasion but shes a much bigger water drinker actually we all drink water before anything else..

We treat juice like cake. Tastes good but you don't need it & only have it occasionally. If we ever have juice, 22 mo DD gets it 50% diluted with water.

We are a no juice family. DD gets some watered down on special occasions or if we are out and I am having some. Or if we are at a friend's house and it is being served. i don't want her to feel left out. But regularly, no.

My grandmother has asked me when I was going to introduce juice too. I think orange juice used to be recommended for babies because they were thought not to get enough vitamin C (and I think that was because the "formula" they used at the time--Carnation milk+corn syrup--didn't contain enough). But now orange juice is not recommended for young babies because it can be too acidic. I know someone who gave her 1-year-old a glass the other day and ended up dealing with a bad diaper rash (burn).

But as others have said, there really is no need to introduce juice.

When I worked as a nanny, I once had a two-year-old point to her glass of water at lunch and demand, "what's that!?? When I explained that it was water, she looked at me like I'd just grown a second head, then she explained to me in a bland, slow tone, "I don't drink water. I only drink juice." (I blinked at her for a moment, then said, "well, today, you're drinking water." I don't remember if that worked or not.)

When my DD (16 mos) was born, I swore I'd never allow her to be a juice-addicted toddler -- heaven forbid someone has to have that conversation with my child!!! Every so often I'll have a tablespoon of juice or lemonade in my water glass, and DD usually gets a sip of that if she asks. But otherwise, it's only water in the sippy cup. I don't think she knows that other beverages are really an option.

I think 100% fruit juice has a fake health aura attached to it, largely thanks to juice advertising and packaging. My parents are very health conscious and even they asked when my 3-month old will be drinking juice. I think my husband also thinks juice is healthy...

But if I have my way, once she starts eating solids, juice will be watered down and for special occasions only... and not for a long time yet. Real fruit, please!

But I'm confused--do breastfed babies need water once they start solids? I thought breastmilk was all they needed for hydration, or is that only until they start solids?

I was always taught that once solids were started a little water would also be good mostly to help prevent constipation.. I also live in a VERY hot eniroment even lately weve been well into the 100s.. So I kinda like that shes getting a little water (and of course feely nursing) overall though its jsut a little practice kinda like food right now is more practicing and tasting then a real huge meal, she gets a few sips of water and thats about it.
