It's flu shot day at work!

Oh yay <<rolls eyes>>

My company offers free flu shots onsite. An email was sent out last week asking us to sign up (it was clear that it was optional at least). Same day, a flier showed up in the break room. It's from www.findaflushot.com and the flier is full of misinformation. It basically says that a flu shot is the ONLY means of protection from the flu, that it is VERY effective (it does at least break it down by age groups and show that it is almost entirely non-effective in the older ages although it does prevent death it does not prevent infection), and that there are ZERO side effects. Oh wait, it says that it's impossible to get the flu from the flu shot (does not differentiate vaccine vs mist) but then later it says 5-10% of people may experience headache, fever, aches, and chills.

I SO BADLY wanted to hang up a flier right next to it with more accurate information, but I didn't. It's kind of a small work place, and everyone knows I'm a bit of a crazy hippy lady

Oh well! No vaccine here!

Oh, how frustrating! I've heard people at work talking about whether to get it or not. I so want to chime in & say "You couldn't pay me enough money to get one!", but I bite my tongue. If I see fliers & such up, I might find one to put up as well. I thought there was one posted here sometime, I will have to find it.

DH's work also does a flu vax day. He is amused that along with the free flu shot, they also give you a goodie bag filled with cough drops and samples of flu meds.

My house of worship gives free flu vaccines.

I bite my tongue every year. Just get used to it or you will be a pariah!

yup....have them at my job too. I just say no thanks and don't get into discussions with people about it. Ive discovered it's really not worth it to try and educate people. If people want to know about something...they do their own research. For the folks that already think the flu shot is the bees knees, they won't listen to me anyway!

We had a flu shot clinic at work a few weeks ago. Everyone kept asking me if I was getting one/why I wasn't getting one, because I am pregnant and NEED one. I was not shy about stating why I would not get a flu shot, especially while pregnant.

My parents are in the process of flu shot shopping. They have several stores around them that offer rewards for getting your flu shot there. One store is a 10% discount on anything bought there that day. Another gives you a coupon booklet, another has a $10 off of a at least $30 purchase, and so forth. My mother called me up and asked where I though they should go I answered truthful that I did not believe in flu shots or most other shots and now she is mad at me.

I wish I could say "No thanks". I used to duck them and no one really said anything, if they were the wiser. Now, not only do they track it through a automated system who has gotten theirs or not, if I don't get it, I face punitive measures and my First Sergeant and Commander getting on my case.

(Army's idea of informed consent: we've informed you that if you don't consent, you will be punished under UCMJ for refusing to follow orders. Then, if that doesn't work, we'll get the 6 biggest, burliest guys here to hold you down while we administer the shot, anyways.)

Now, to time it as to when I can afford to be out sick...or could use a couple days off.

That's REALLY weird - and funny at the same time! "Thanks for getting the shot, now here are some things for when you get sick". Just weird!

Every place is pushing the shot this year. Drug stores, Target, etc. Even our gym, Lifetime Fitness, had a flu shot 'clinic' the other day. Made me cringe.

Please tell me your parents are not getting multiple flu shots just to cash in on these incentives?

Eeek!

No I do not think they would be that clueless, but they really are looking into which place has the coolest deals. They figure since they are going to get one anyways they might as well get the coolest deal along with it.

And lets not forget that the shot might not even be protecting you from the right strain.

Well, the numbers are in, only TWO of us on-site employees chose not to get a flu shot. TWO. There were 42 who got vaccinated, including about 6 who work off site but came just to get the shot.

The one other employee who chose not to stopped by my office and kind of whispered "are you the other one?" I said yes, she said "I thought it was you, you seem like the type that wouldn't." Then she and I discussed our reasons for not choosing it, and she said that she is really supportive of all the "other stuff" I do or don't do (breastfeeding, natural birthing, leaving my boys intact, baby wearing, cosleeping, etc) and she wishes she had researched more when she was a young mom (she had her one and only son at age 15, but she is married to his father and has made a great career for herself and life for her family)

As of today (two days later) no one is complaining of feeling sick at all. I hope that continues to be the case!

Good for you.

I have been in groups and have challenged myself to pick out the crunchy one. I am usually right.

There is a quiet aura about some people.

Oh my! LOL Gee...it's probably a hand out for him to give to everyone he knows who DIDN'T get the flu shot and will most assuredly get the flu! LOL
