It's flu shot day at work! - Page 2

Nurse here too and I refused. The main immunization "spokesperson" gave us an in-service about how effective and important it is (blah blah) and used my newborn and I as a prime example. He said everyone should get one to protect those who can't get one like newborns. He also mentioned getting the Tdap as well... I'll stick to my vitamin D like I always do.

I thought it was funny, this year my mom was like "you and DP need to go get your flu shots. I'll pay for you if you can't afford them." I said "No thanks, we don't do flu shots." (much calmer than our fights last year about swine flu vaccine) She just said "well, I'm your mom, I have to try" which made me laugh inside. like the flu vaccine is the biggest problem I could have

I'm new around these parts. What's the argument against the flu shot?

I am public school teacher, teach science to Kindergartners through 3rd graders, so I'm surrounded by all kinds of wonderful germs. I get the flu every year. I got the flu shot two years ago for the first time and didn't get the flu. I didn't get the flu shot last year and I did get it.

I have a newborn now, 28 days old, and I'm wondering if I should get it or not?

Christian, take lots of vitamin D3. That is what seems to work best.

NO. Thats my opinion.

The thing that confuses most people about the flu is that when you get sick with flu like symptoms, but its prolly not actually the flu. There are so many (like 1000s) of flu like illnesses that could make you think you are sick with the flu.

I NEVER get the shot, and have yet to know for sure that when I was sick, I was sick with the FLU, and not some other type of GI bug. Rarely did I exibit all the symptoms of the flu, and rarely was I sick for more then a day. (3 at the most)

And FWIW, I have two kids in daycare 50 hours a week, they brough home everything under the sun. But so far, NOT the flu.

Lady Lilya Christian, take lots of vitamin D3. That is what seems to work best.

Good to know. How much Vitamin D3 are you taking? I take 1000units a day. Is that enough?

IMO Flu shots don't work. period. there is plenty of evidence to support this.

As for vit D, unless you spend at least 30 min outside in the high sun with 80% of your body exposed with no sunscreen on everyday, it's unlikely that 1,000mg is enough. You should get your level tested for a baseline so you can supplement appropriately. I have mine tested every 6 months. I currently take 5,000mg/day.

you can join this initiative and get your levels tested every 6 months or ask your doc.

The recommendations I have read that seem to make the most sense to me say:
1000IUs per every 25lbs of body weight per day

This is a maintenance dose. Basically, what your body uses on a daily basis.

If you think you are fighting off an impending illness, or already have one, you want to multiply that by 10.

Many people take 50,000IUs per day for years with no ill effects. It is really hard to overdo it.

But I think it is a good idea to get a blood test. The correct test is called 25(OH)D. See where you stand. Then you know if you need larger doses on a regular basis.

My test results were good, so I just do the maintenance dose (except for days when I get a LOT of sun).
