Yet another Potty question..

I have yet to see ANYONE here mention this on the fly, so i thought I would ask outright and see what kind of answers i get.

Does anyone have a child who is physically repulsed by going to the bathroom? I mean my son (Who sits to pee 98% of the time) will gag when he smells his own urine. And yes, he can smell it, as can I, but its not a ridiculously STRONG odor. its just the smell of fresh pee. This usually happens on the normal size toilets. The smaller toilets (For kids) at his daycare he seems fine with. Same thing with his little potty. I think his legs kind block the smell. But on the big toilets, he gags, and if you dont move him quick enough, he will actually vommitt. He did this to my husband last night.

I just had a friend ask me if I get on him for this, or if it just doesnt bother me, and i was little taken back by her question. How am I supposed to get on him about something he cant control?

My other question is, if your child also has such a weak stomach, how did poopin go? Cuz we have yet to poop on the toilet. Its very frustrating. hes three, can keep his underwear dry (we started underpants over the weekend, hes been in pullup for a while), but had a couple accidnets in the last couple of days. Because of that, he ended up with a pullup on, and thats when he pooped. So he hasnt had the poopy pants yet. Not sure if that will help him make the decision to try the going on the toilet.

UGH, this is all so frustrating!

Does he sit on the big toilet with one of those seat ring thingies or just by himself? Just wondering if the smaller surface to sit on might help? Could you keep something that smells good to him in the bahroom to hold up to his nose while going, then flush quickly right after? I know as a small kid if I was in a place that smelled bad to me and I had on long sleeves, I often would smell my sleeve of my shirt to mask the other one. Or teach him to pinch his nose and breathe through his mouth while going to the restroom? Good luck!

Or just get him a hand towel or the like to drape over his lap. My guess is that things will improve as he gets taller and his nose moves farther up.

Wow, the towel is a good idea.

I tried telling him to breathe threw his nose, and it works, but its EVER.SINGLE.TIME.

No, at home we dont have a potty seat, so hes just sitting on the big huge hole. I will have to invest in a potty seat this weekend and see if that helps.

sapphire, you made me giggle.

So no one said if my child is the only oddball out there that is like this?

My dd's a weirdo the other way. She sits on a little potty full of poop and I'm gagging at 10 paces and wants to sit for another 10 minutes reading her books.

ETA: you're going to definitely want your ds to start out with pooping on the big toilet if at all possible, the little potties don't minimize the smell at all.

DS used to vomit on the potty, when he was first trying to learn to go. I realized that it was because he was straining and bearing down too hard, and was making himself gag as a result. He got over that in a few weeks, when his control improved a little bit. He has a hair-triggered gag reflex-- always has.

My DD will pull her lego table over to the little potty and play legos while she goes poo and sit there for quite a while too. I finally just took a picture of it because it made me giggle every time I saw her drag it over to the potty then sit down to do her business.
