Your Grocery Trip

Thread Starter
What did you last buy at the grocery store to feed your family?
How long does that last?
Or you last delivery of food?
What does a typical grocery list of yours look like?
Do you shop weekly? More? Less?
I shop weekly. Typical list:

bread
eggs
bananas
oranges
kiwi
veggies (I buy a combo of fresh and frozen, usually)
granola bars
milk
whole milk yogurt for the baby
2% greek yogurt for me
can of salmon
cheese
1# ground beef
chicken sausages or some other meat
pasta
tomato sauce
a few frozen convenience foods (tamales, pasta)

I stock up on other random things like canned/dried beans, rice, broth, oatmeal, peanut butter etc. so I don't have to buy everything I need to make food for the week. This would last us most of week if not a whole week. Sometimes we run out of fruit or bread or milk before the end of the week.

We also usually eat out once per week for dinner and once for lunch.
I shop for the majority of the food weekly but usually stop at the store again towards the end of the week to replenish the produce since we go through it fast. Typical list is:

carrots
apples
bananas
cucumbers if they look good
grapes
strawberries
melon of some sort
red peppers
spinach
onion
potatoes
mushrooms
some other veggie that's on sale
orange juice
lemonade
butter (not every week)
eggs (again, not every week)
bread

I generally stock up on meat when it's a good price so I don't buy that every week. I always have chicken breasts, salmon and some type of beef (currently tri-tip) in the freezer.
I buy weekly. A typical week (feeding two) would be something like:
1.5-2 pounds ground beef or a whole chicken
5-8 peices of fresh seasonal fruit that's perfect right now. in summer, it can be more like 3 pounds
a ton of seasonal veggies. (basically, when we go to our favorite produce store, we walk out with 2-3 full bags filled with pretty much just fresh produce, 70-80% of it veggies. onions and potatoes and greens are pretty standard. carrots often. it really depends on our menu plan and the season. lately, we've had lots of greens, squash, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, tons and tons of fruit, etc
tomato paste/canned tomatoes (we use this most weeks)
1-1.5 pounds of butter
a quart of yogurt if it's a good price
a pint of cream most weeks
we also buy 2 qt of milk and a dozen eggs most weeks
raisins
nuts
a little bit of cheese for snacking or a planned meal (often feta because it's so cheap)

in addition, we buy things we need to stock the pantry (we don't have a significant pantry, maybe someday:
we buy olive oil every other week pretty much except when we buy it in bulk
coconut oil every month or so
most weeks we buy a few pounds of a grain or legume or two to stock up. (usually we buy what we need for that week, but buy more than we need so we have it around. then buy more when we run low.) this could be chickpeas, navy beans, mung beans, lima beans (my new ), rice, whole wheat couscous, millet, etc
salt
flours (we stock white wheat, whole wheat, white whole wheat, whole rye, whole spelt, sprouted whole spelt, and sometimes others. we have garbonzo as well right now)
whole wheat pasta

It often ends up lasting about 8-9 days instead of the 7 we plan.
I shop once a week, more or less.

Milk
half and half
eggs
bread
peanut butter if on sale--we go through 1 a week, but I buy a lot when it's on sale
saltines
whatever is on sale (meat, dry goods, pantry things)
produce--usually onions, bananas, cilantro, jalapenos,
some other fruit, lettuce, a leafy green or two, sometimes cauliflower, avocado, cucumbers, potatoes or sweet potatoes, and anything else that looks good

I can like 100 quarts of tomatoes in the summer to get us through the year. I buy a lot when things are on sale--enough to get us through to the next sale. So, I might buy 15 cans of fruit, even though we only eat 1-2 a week. Or I might buy 20 jars of pb, knowing we eat one a week. Stuff like that. Whatever I have room for/is a good price/will get me through to the next sale. I buy about 4-6 weeks worth of pasta, cause it goes on sale frequently. Three weeks of chicken breasts, cause they go on sale frequently. that sort of thing.
I go about every 1.25 weeks.
My list is usually:

Broccoli- 2 or 3 heads
Spinach- tub
Mixed greens
Sugar snap peas
carrots
2 tomatoes
bunch of bananas
seasonal fruit- apples right now, berries in the summer
Tofu
Mushrooms
Peppers- 2 or 3
Spaghetti
sauce
Frozen GB
Frozen fish- usually salmon and shrimp
Milk
Almond Milk
Cereal for dh- whatever is cheap and comes in a big box
Red Onion
Avocado
Dozen Eggs
Bag shredded cheddar
Tortillas
canned beans- always make sure i am well stocked on chickpeas and blackbeans
Larabars-3
Diet mtn. dew for dh
2 frozen pizzas
variety of tv dinners for dh
soup

Also, when i'm out i'll buy flour, butter, oats and oils.

I spend about 140ish. Usually the beginning of the month when i'm out of all my baking stuff I can spend close to 200$

Mine is weird because we buy a lot of our food directly from local farmers.

I just bought 1/4 of a cow from a local farm ($331/130lbs).

We have backyard chickens so we don't buy eggs. We spend about $6/month on feed and supplies for them.

Each week we get a gallon of raw milk from a local farm ($5)

Each week during warm weather we get a bunch of produce from our farmers market (this week we got lettuce, tomatoes, 15 peppers, and 2 squash for about $20)

We picked apples last week and got a fridge drawer full ($12)

Every 4 months or so we buy pork and chicken from a local farm as well. This usually costs around $100.

I went to the regular grocery store today and bought:
-cereal
-granola bars
-cheddar bunnies
-bread
-kale
-grapes
-bananas
- huge container of dried cranberries
($28 for everything)

Every month we seriously stock up at our food co-op. I usually spend about $150 and get things like:
coffee
dried beans and lentils
rice
oatmeal
nuts
dried fruit
frozen fruit and veg that we can't get in season
cheese
tofu
flour
oil
chips
yogurt (when I don't feel like making mine)
nut butters

I have no idea how much we spend every week. I think it's between $100 and $150. We're super healthy eating this way and I've never felt better, so we probably save by not buying prescriptions or co-pays.
On a weekly basis-

eggs
milk
cheddar/mozarella cheese
half n half
stoneyfield yogurt
bagels/english muffins
2 loaves bread

hamburger
chicken
pork
steak
lunchmeat

bananas
apples/oranges/grapes
broccoli
spinach (for smoothies)

every month or so I buy potatoes, onions, garlic, ginger

we have probably 40 lbs of blueberries in the freezer. Many packs of green beans zucchini and peas from the garden. And we grow our own lettuce/beets/tomatoes/cukes/pears/raspberries/apples/herbs....etc. can our own jams, put up pickled things......

I use coupons to stock up on pantry items like canned tomatoes, oils, granola bars, oatmeal, flour, sugar, cereal, beans, string cheese, crackers, peanutbutter, coffee, juice, frozen pizza, pasta. I am saving a lot of money by buying in bulk during a sale with coupons than I am buying these things weekly.
we shop once every 10 days, with maybe a smaller trip halfway through.

veggie sandwich slices
oatmeal
bagels
granola bars
apples
(these are my dh's staples... i barely touch them)

fruit (what looks good and is on sale)
salad stuff
hardy veg (broc, peppers, celery, sweet potato, squash, eggplant etc)
big bags of onions, potatoes, carrots every 2-3 trips
soymilk
tofu
cans (beans, tomato, coconut milk, fruit, a couple soups)
dry (beans, lentils, couscous, pasta, bulgur, rice noodles, nuts etc)
snacky stuff (hummus, crackers, maybe chocolate)
condiments and ethnic foods (usually a couple things per trip, almond butter, jam, chilis, bamboo shoots, rice vinegar, hot sauce, soy sauce, EVOO, oils)

rice i buy twice per year in truly massive quantities, but we go through a ton.

we aim to spend $100 per trip, usually ends up being more like $110

I shop less than weekly. I keep common beans and grains on hand (buy as needed in 20-25lb volumes) and will buy flours this winter (whole wheat and white/all purpose). We have a freezer full of a portion of a cow and fruit and vegetables picked in season. I also can fruits, salsas and jams quite a bit during the harvest season.

When I shop, I'm mostly buying oil, dairy (though I am looking into delivery services), dried pasta, restocking my spices, and restocking a few other random odds and ends.

The kids and I went yesterday and got peanut and sesame oil, ten pounds of flour, sesame seeds, red chili flakes, two jars of our favorite jarred sauce for pizza, a few yogurts, a pint cream, and some cheese sticks for the kids. And some fresh ginger.

Our CSA delivers our produce every Friday.

I shop every Saturday morning. First stop is the farmer's market where I get the meat, the eggs, any other produce I may want/need, and locally roasted coffee for DH.

Then TJs, where I pick up dairy, staple veg (onions, potatoes, carrots), and any frozen veg (peas, corn, artichoke hearts).

Then the local independent grocery store, where I pick up anything remaining on my list (sometimes it's just sour cream or a single-serve yogurt/buttermilk to use as starter).

If we're having guests, I might stop at the bakery in there for fresh bread. If I'm out of laundry detergent, add another stop at the HFS. If I need XY or Z, I might stop at WF (or I might walk down later).

But basically I do all my shopping once a week between 8 am and 10 am while DH is on baby duty.
I shop every 2ish weeks. Sometimes longer, but rarely more often than that.

I'm going today so I'll post my list for that since I don't remember what we got last time.
english muffins
bagels
hamburger buns
tofutti cream cheese
rice milk
vitamins
salami
cheese
milk
juice
popcorn
peanut butter
italian dressing
crackers
eggs
frozen pizza
toilet paper
shampoo
toothpaste

That stuff's all on sale, except the rice milk, so I'll stock up and those things will last us probably 2 months. The next time I go to the store, I'll stock up on sale stuff again and it's just a big cycle.

I do buy apples and bananas almost every time I go, all the veggies we eat, except lettuce, are from my garden so I won't need to buy those. We just butchered a steer so we've got tons of beef and I don't buy pork or chicken from the grocery store.

We're a family of five, and I "big shop" once a month. I make up a monthly menu and a list by store of what we need. About once a week I'll have to pick up fresh fruit and veggies, but it's usually less than $20 worth.
Yesterday I went to Costo and spent $460 (this includes personal care items and vitamins.) I'll hit up our local grocery and probably spend about $75-100 tomorrow. I also plan on going to the farmer's market and getting a bushel or two for applesauce and some fresh greens and sweet potatoes and tomatoes....and seed garlic.

As to what I go....ahhh, what didn't I get?
9 lbs hamburger
2 whole chickens
1 large pork loin
2 beef roasts
Salmon
Tilapia
Ham (lunchmeat)
Shredded, sliced, and block cheddar
String cheese
Two (double bags) of cereal
12 Greek yogurts
4 lbs coffee beans
4 qts heavy cream
4 lbs butter
2 gal each: OJ, AJ, and GJ
4 lvs bread
30 tortillas
Pears
Bananas
Grapes
Pineapple
Bag of lettuce
Applesauce single serves
Peaches single serves
Annie's fruit snacks (a first for us! kids were ecstatic)
1 gal milk (we get our milk through a coop, but are going through it quickly this time)
Frozen corn, green beans, broccoli (5 lbs each)
10 lbs oatmeal
White and brown sugar
Soy sauce
Spag sauce
Huge cinnamon
Plus TP, vitamins, lotion, soap, etc.
There was probably more, but that's the gist of it.

I had bought 3 doz eggs from our local "egg lady" earlier, and will be back there in probably two weeks. Maybe less, since DS and I are on break from school for three weeks and I'll probably make bigger hot breakfasts. DD will take her lunch to school everyday, and when DS and I are in, we pack lunches too. So, this is essentially three meals a day for five of us for a month.

This is only the second time I've done it like this, and I love it. I'm so organized and I have almost everything I need for every meal. I added more bread, coffee, and cream this time to eliminate mid-month errands. Also, I have a lot from last month left over and a number of items I've canned or frozen to have great variety in our menu.

I get everything at Costco. I stock up on stuff every week and since it's all in such big amounts it lasts a while, so I don't know how to answer. I get stuff like spinach, bananas, and apples every week and they last about a week, but then in the same trip I'll stock up on rice milk (a big case lasts about 2 months), oats, cheese, broccoli, carrots, etc. Today I'm getting...

Spinach
Apples
2 whole chickens
Strawberries
Canned pumpkin

Love this thread! There are so many "what do you spend on groceries" post but it's nice to see what people are spending that money on.

I will have to keep my receipt from my next trip.
