Your Grocery Trip - Page 2

We shop once a week.

CSA weekly pickup supplies us with various organic veggies. This week:
1/2 lb. salad greens
2 heads garlic
nappa cabbage
a small eggplant
1 1/2 lb. carrots
2 lbs. potatoes
1 1/2 lb. beets
acorn squash
a few parsnips
small bunch kale
1 leek
1 bunch radishes

From the grocery store I spent about $35 on:
Grapes (on sale)
4 lbs. butter (it was on sale for $2.97 each - this will last us 2-3 months)
1 package of boneless skinless chicken breasts (on sale $2.88/lb.)
Indian Flatbread (on sale for $1.77)
Four 2L bottles of diet pop (on sale for 99cents each - will last a week or 2)
Five tubes Pilsbury crescent rolls (on sale 99cents each - will last 2-3 months)
Bag of sugar (5 lbs.? - regular price at discount place - will last months unless I make jam or jelly)

I also have one more grocery store to go to before this flyer is over. Prime rib is on sale for $4.99/lb. so we will probably buy 2. If it was on sale for $3.99/lb. we would stock up... maybe buy 3 or 4 depending on how good they look and their sizes. We'll eat a small one fresh and freeze the rest.

Our items at checkout look very strange... but what we buy from the grocery store is complimented by our CSA and what we already have at home. We have a very well-stocked pantry and chest freezer, so every week we are basically buying only items that are in the flyer.

We also re-stock the pantry/freezer as needed but only when the items are on sale at the right price (which is the lowest sale price we see on a semi-regular basis). For example, when canned tomatoes go on sale really cheap we buy a case or two. This week I was "stocking up" on butter, although some of the other items I bought this week will last for months too.

Eggs - I get a dozen every 2 weeks from a small farm for $2.75 (cage-free, brown eggs)

What is listed above is pretty typical, we have been getting free range and wild caught meat for the family from other sources than the grocery the past months (I only eat the wild caught fish as far as meat goes)
Our pantry is very well stocked on beans and we eat them frequently in all different dishes, brown rice/whole flours are also well stocked in pantry

Weekly, or about every 8-9 days, unless someone forgot something

I'm surprised how many are buying asparagus and strawberries. I love those around May. We're overrun with apples and potatoes and pumpkins now.

I went today, I go weekly. Takes me 1 hour to get there, buy stuff, and get home, probably 45 minutes in the store? The eggs, sometimes some meat, and a lot of our fruit and veggies come from the farmer's market most weeks (local, seasonal). I stock up on flour and stuff like that, not as much as I could though. Here's what we bought today.

Orange Juice
Milk
Yogurt
Cheese
Cream Cheese
Butter
WW Sandwich bread
Tortillas
Crackers
Pasta
Chili Powder
Graham Cracker Crumbs
Tomato Sauce
Canned Tomatoes
Ground Beef
Boneless Chicken Breasts
Turkey Lunchmeat
Bacon
Salsa
Broccoli
Lettuce
Onion
Bananas
Carrots

We are highly inefficient and erratic in our grocery shopping as we have several different places we go:

From the regular grocery store, usually once per week:
3-4 types of fruit
4-5 veggies
1-2 boxes of pasta
pasta sauce
2 gallons of milk
2 loaves of bread
cheese
yogurt
eggs
replacement of selected items such as PB, jam, honey, cereal, butter, olive oil, dried fruits, nuts, pretzels

Then there's usually a stop at TJ's to replenish fruit and pick up any forgotten items. As need, we stck up on frozen salmon patties, smoked salmon, veggie burgers, other random goodies.

About every two weeks we also go to a Pan-Asian market and stock up on fish, especially if the have a good deal on wild salmon. We also get staple veggies there and special fruits and veggies that we can only get there or can only afford to get there. Also tofu and various sauces and condiments.

About once per month, we also go to an Indianarket to stock up on spices, rice, more random goodies.

We definitely spend too much time doing grocery shopping but we cannot seem to get organized enough. I would love it if we could make it more than one week without shopping but I don't think that is realistic given the volume of fruits we go through and they just don't seem to hold up for more than 4-5 days anyway, especially bananas and berries.

I need to become more organized. I should be able to shop once a week... but I don't. I shop two to three times a week. Thank goodness the grocery store is a walking distance away... right next door!

My DH has farmer's market next to work and I count on him for groceries on Wednesday. He buys lots of fruit, loaf of bread or two, tomatoes, and veggies in season. When at the grocery store, I shop "the perimeter". Sometimes I get a few canned foods (olives, tomato sauce), jarred food (spaghetti sauce, nut butters), packaged food (rice, beans), & processed foods (tortillas, breads, cereal, nut/grain milk). I require certain 'specialty' food... I say that because no one grocery store has everything we need... we have to go to 3 or 4 different ones. (I'm vegan.)

Today we got spaghetti squash, butternut squash, asian pears, 3 kinds of apples, eggplant, beets, tomatoes, loaf of bread, and splurged on an apple turnover. The fruit will last us through the week. Then, I google for recipes on how to prepare the other stuff... but usually, it's pretty easy.

2 rolls paper towels ()
gallon 1% milk
1 bag ripple chips
2 tubs party dip
10 6 oz containers of yogurt
2 bags cheetos (DH)
1 pkg tortillas
2 boxes instant oatmeal
3 1 lb boxes pasta
1 frozen pizza
1 lb shredded cheddar cheese
1 head of green cabbage
1 lb baby carrots
3 lbs bananas
2 lbs red grapes
1 butternut squash
1 acorn squash
3.5 lbs apples
1 lb butter
4 6 pk Diet Dr Pepper (me, )
2 10 lb packages of chicken hindquarters
5 lbs chicken wings (football party tomorrow)
2 bottles wing sauce
1 gallon orange juice
1 small bottle ranch dressing

total was right about $90

How long does that last?

this will last about a week. we have a well stocked freezer and pantry. so I didn't buy any beef or pork this week because chicken was on sale.

Do you shop weekly? More? Less?

mostly weekly. I may stop midweek for a few things.

I shop at up to 5 different stores: regular grocery store, natural grocery store, farmer's market, overstock/99 cent stores; and Costco. I shop weekly, on up to 3 days of the week. Mondays I alternate natural grocery store, overstock/99 cent stores depending on what I'm out of; farmer's market on Tuesdays; regular grocery store on Sunday after church. Costco once a month. Here's my general list, subject to what's on sale and what's in season:

milk
butter
yogurt
eggs
fresh fruits and vegetables (always apples and bananas, even if they aren't in season or local)
frozen fruits and vegetables
canned beans, tomatoes
canned tuna and salmon
dried pastas
rice
potatoes, yams/sweet potatoes
bread, rolls
flours, sugar
oatmeal, couscous
garlic
sour cream
cheese (always sharp cheddar; mozzarella, Jack, Feta, Parmesan, etc. as needed)
maple syrup
black tea, herb teas
hot chocolate mix
honey
beef, chicken, pork, fish, sausages
dried fruit
popcorn
nuts
peanut butter and jam
oils (mainly olive and coconut)
lunch meats from the deli (ham, salami, beef, turkey; rotated for variety)
