a success night weaning story!

just thought i'd share, as i was always wondering how it might happen for my ds i had no intentions of night weaning him anytime soon, but i had been sick and nursing every hour was very exhausting for me.

but first back up a couple of weeks: my son was taking forvere to fall asleep at nap one day and i had been nursing him "to sleep" for almost an hour and a half. he is 28 months, then 27 i guess.

so i just got up, set up the family bed, and said you are going to sleep like a big boy now. i love you, stay in bed and fall asleep. put the monitor on and walked out of the room. i saw him sit up and i called out to him from the house, "go to sleep" and he yelled, "no!" and i said yes etc. it was actually really funny, i was laughing the whole time. we went back and forth probably 3 times and then he just laid there talking to himself, moving his legs etc for probably 30 minutes and all of a sudden he said"ugh" and flipped to his side/tummy and didnt wake up for 2 hours.

so because of that experience i knew he could fall asleep on his own finally!

fast forward, last week i was sick and just couldnt nurse through the night. the first 2-3 nights were the hardest, but by the 4th night i believe he was only waking up once and i can easily get him back to sleep by rubbing his back. i would offer water to him, sometimes he wants to hold my breast, or i'll rub his back. only once, the second night, did he freak out so much that we had to bring him into the living room to calm down and give him some crackers and stuff.

so im here to tell you, there can be sleep again! and i am really happy for my son because he sleeps so much better now

I successfully night weaned my 22 month old, then 21 last month as well. It was easier than I thought and she is sleeping SO much better. you give me hope that in about 6 months I don't have to lay there until she falls asleep too!
