My bread did not rise! Can I save it? (Artisan in 5 min a Day)

I made my bread dough the same way I always do, using the Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day master recipe. I did everything the same as usual, but it did not poof up and fill the container like it always does.

Can I do anything? If I bake it will it be total crap? It was part of the plan for dinner tonight.

Was it warm enough where you left it to rise? If not, a longer rise time in slightly warmer temperatures should help to make it bakeable. Did it rise at all? If it did, give it more time. If the yeast was no good or if your water was too hot and killed it, you'd have to add more yeast to make anything other than a brick with the dough.

It is 80 degrees in my house, so it should be warm enough! Plus I have dinner cooking, and have for the past hour, so that should be helping. I'll give it more time. It has been 2 hours, but maybe it needs more.

ETA: It is a rainy day here. Maybe humidity has something to do with it?

This is the first time I've had an issue with this method, and I've been doing it for over a year.

Throw your yeast into some warm water with a pinch of sugar and see if it bubbles. I'm guessing your yeast is dead, but that way you'll know for sure.

It sounds like maybe your yeast has gone bad. you could try and add more, but I would roll it thin thin thin and sprinkle some sea salt on top, cut it into 2 inch squares and make crackers out of it.

It has gotten a little higher since I first posted. Not by tons, but noticeable.

Off to check the yeast now...

Okay, so the yeast mixture got a little cloudy, but nothing I would consider to be bubbles.

The yeast packet exp. date is 6/2011. I wonder what happened?
