Was he an early avid reader? I was and it was very hard for me to keep calm about my dd's slower pace. I had to constanly remind myself that reading any at age four is good because it isn't expected. Tell him you will try again in a two months when your son has had a break. At this point just reading instead of teaching from a reading book may be more engaging for your son and you may see more growth that way. This is what I saw with my dd once she had mastered some of the rules. The rest she learns while actually reading.
