Most nurses and doctors I know definitely do not decline the flu shot, IME. I'm a nurse. I will be picked apart when I decline it this year. It's coming up in a few days. I am going to have to tell my new job that i will not get the flu shot. They have been talking about making it mandatory to work in this hospital. Not looking forward to next week.

my friend is a nurse in a hospital, and she ALWAYS gets the shot. she said if a doc or nurse doesnt they are sorta shunned, like highschool all over again!

I will not be getting a flu shot either. My DH is an RN and he'll be declining it as well. The hospital policy this year states that any practitioner who doesn't receive a flu shot will have to wear a mask while performing any patient care.

My Dh works in project management for a health clinic organization. They have made it mandatory for everyone this year. He's already had it.

No, I will not be getting it, for some of the reasons pp mentioned, the additives in it, and I also have concerns about the effect upon the immune/autoimmune systems when injecting foreign material in one's bloodstream.

Nope. I won't be getting it. I don't believe they are safe, necessary, or effective.
I won't either.

Regarding the latest commercial I saw, claiming that the flu vax will continue to protect the baby up to 6 mos after birth: so will nursing I actually had H1N1 last October when my dd3 was just shy of 4 mos old. She didn't catch a thing! I however, was sick out of work for two whole weeks, and suffered from the cough for two months total. It was miserable. None of the rest of my family caught it either, but my dh's family is almost embarrassingly healthy as a general rule and my kids even more so. I blame all the breastmilk they got as babies.
Definitely not! I think it would do more harm than good.
Not here. I still have lots of reading & learning to do, but my instincts are anti-vax.

Spoke to a not so great ER doc yesterday. They asked if my child's vaccines were up to date and I simply said we don't vax. He didn't like that and asked why. I told him I've done research and do not believe that vaccines are safe. He said, "Where did you do your research?" I said on the internet. He immediately said that wasn't a good source. Basically that is saying that only medical professionals would know anything because where the heck else am I supposed to find information on that?

I explained I did look at reputable sites like the VARS(?) where they report adverse reactions to vaccines. He's like oh yeah, some people do have bad reactions. I'm like yeah, exactly. I also said I looked up the ingredients in vaccines and didn't like them. He didn't have much to say to that. And my husband explained that in Romania they give 3 times less vaccines than the US and are overall much healthier. He didn't know what to say to that either and went on to change the subject.

Oh, and he had the gumption to try to claim that my kids are fine because of "herd immunity." I'm like thinking to myself. If he believes that then he's really ignorant. From what I know, my kids could get sick if they are around a recently vaccinated child. I'm glad I am a SAHM and plan to home school.

Oh and he said how he doesn't believe in giving every vaccine. Like he doesn't think the chicken pox vax is necessary but he gave his kid's it because he didn't know who he could bring his kids to to get chicken pox. I said after that that it would have been better if they hadn't created that vaccine because then everyone would still get it in childhood pretty much and they'd be better off. He then changed his story and said, that it was dangerous to get chicken pox as a child and that the vaccines were a good thing. Yeah, interesting...

Nope, never had a flu shot, never will unless absolutely necessary. Most of my friends that have had one say they end up getting the flu anyway. I just don't see the point.

I'm not sure that most nurses and doctors decline the flu shot, if anything most hospitals make it mandatory to get one unless you are medically waived.

dayiscoming...that is nuts!

Nope, I have never gotten a flu shot, and won't.

I have never gotten a flu shot and am not about to start. I'm a geriatric nurse and work with people in quite bad condition healthwise. Last year I hear they pushed the swine flu vac on the staff (I was still on a leave) but normally they make do with vaccinating the grannies. Makes sense to me that way.

I am in a bit of a pickle, my first appointment I answered yes I had all my vaccines growing up... I have yet to mention we are a no vax family though, because I am very cautious when and how I share that. I will not be receiving the flu shot. I actually know a friend of a friend that has a miscarriage in result of having H1N1 shot last year. So not a risk I am going to take when it took us 4 years to have baby#2.

I am thinking of typing up a written statement that while I was vaccinated in my younger years I do not religiously or philosophically practice that anymore.

I can't believe how much has changed since giving birth in 2004, never had any vaccines pushed on me like now.

My sister is a nurse and she refuses a flu shot as we know three people including herself that have gotten sick from it in result of having one in the past.

I don't see why you'd need to type up a statement. Just tell them you don't plan on getting it. Even with the statement they'll still ask if that's what they're encouraged to do.

My dh says the same thing. So I just need to say no not taking it and move on then. I have such a mild personality it is hard for me to be assertive, but in this case it is something I feel strongly about and just going to have to say no and stand my ground. Thanks for the advice :

In general, I had all my vaccinations when I was little and growing up, and I'm not anti-vax. However when it comes to flu shots, I don't get them, and I don't get the flu. I live in a rural community and am pretty healthy so I'm just not that worried about it.

I plan to bring some of this up with the midwife in the OB practice next week.

My Dad in Law already sent me info - an article citing a interview based study done with American Indians, woefully small sample size, saying that the vax protects the fetus into the first six months of life.

I just don't buy it. Not thrilled about this pending fight. He's really flu-shot crazy. He is every year. He's also a high anxiety person.

I will vaccinate my kids in the future. I hate the idea of putting something into my body in the late first/early second trimester.

Even before I was "anti vax" (which is not really my label, but don't feel like getting into my thoughts of vaccines in detail) I didn't get the flu shot. I remember having one while in college about 10 yrs ago because I think a professor offered extra credit if we got one. I've had the flu once or twice that I remember in my 30 years of life. It has always been a non issue for me. I was almost convinced to get one while pregnant, but thank goodness my midwife looked at me like I was crazy when I asked for it and said "Why do you want that?"
This past Monday I was dropping my son off at nursery school and overheard a mother and his teacher talking about sickness. The mother mentioned that her husband has been very sick since he got the flu shot. He had to come home the day he got it because he wasn't feeling well and is still feeling awful and "it's got him down." My son's teacher commented on how strange that was because she got her flu shot last week and a few days later her arm started throbbing with pain and feels tingly. I thought to myself: They are openly talking about vaccine reactions here, but then I get called crazy when I say that vaccines are highly reactive.
This year's shot isn't just seasonal flu, it's paired with H1N1 and I remember reading somewhere that some places have shots that also contain H1N3? I need to go look for that link...
So, no. I will not be getting the shot and neither will anyone in my family. Also, in relation to the topic about healthcare workers declining the shot, all of my nurse or healthcare worker friends don't get the flu shot unless forced to by their employer. One nurse friend of mine made a huge deal of it last year when they mandated it. She eventually had to give in, but she was very upset because she says she has "seen way to many cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome after flu vaccination."
