I would think you could just buy some cotton flannel when it's on sale for $2/yard and cut your own blankets.

We had just moved into this house at about 29 weeks... so we needed new towels anyway. I bought a bunch of really cheap cream ones... and despite cleaning up blood, I don't see any stains on any of them! but the midwives did get them into the wash right away before they left (part of their job, according to them)

Receiving blankets we went through half of our dozen. They got wet, or dirty... with pee or poop or blood (especially when DH cut the cord... it had stopped pulsing long before and I had already delivered the placenta but still it splattered all over!) I bought them at garage sales for a quarter a piece though... and do plan on turning them all into other things. As it is for now they are mostly being used as changing mats on the floor...

We went through three hats after the birth before her head was dry enough to go hat-free. Two from our birth kit and one of our own.

For sheets, we have two that are almost the same color... ironically one was DHs and one was mine from before we moved in together, but we bought them without the other knowing and they ended up the same color of green! In any case, we used those... putting down a liner first, then a sheet, then a liner, then a sheet. We used chux pads during the birth but we still needed to take off the top sheet and liner because stuff had gotten on it.

We had to buy peroxide... came in handy because my water broke in a huge gush/spray all over the midwife and past the chux pad onto our cream-colored carpeting! The midwife used a bit of peroxide to clean it up and you would never know now.

We had to buy virgin olive oil too... which I found odd... until she showed me that it was to use on Maes bottom to make the meconium easier to wipe off... such a great idea!

We did have to buy batteries but they were listed specifically as - Flashlight with extra batteries (the flashlight ended up only being used after the birth, to help her see where she was stitching me but I can see it coming in handy other times too) so they were not a specific size for them... ended up being AA as that was what our flashlight and DHs camera used.

I had the same thoughts about all the blankets, but we ended up using all of them. I had a waterbirth so three of those blankets got used up right away to wrap her, then after getting out and drying off we wrapped again and she peed on them so a couple more...you get the idea. But yeah, we used all the blankets that I thought were overkill!

My sheets came out totally clean, and it was a bloodbath (I sat up and *gush*).
