Canadian history...

Thread Starter
Dd is turning into a history buff. I would like to throw some Canadian history in here though. We have touched on it a bit through things we have been exposed to here but I would like to expand on it (we live in the land of Louis Reil, Northwest Rebellion and such, have a local fort etc ...actually the school curriculum in this province pretty much only talks about Manitoba through gr. 7 or so).

Does anyone know of anything (online, or books) which is a bit more comprehensive? We have some books in our local library, but they are a bit wordy, above her age level, and hard to hold her attention due to the layout. We are reading some historical novels from the "Our Canadian Girl' series right now which she enjoys. She is a big picture kind of learner, so something that is comprehensive that touches on First Nations/first peoples, right through the fur trade, formation of provinces, a kid friendly over view of how our government is set up, etc would be nice...for me too...I was really stumbling when I was trying to explain why we have the Queen on our money LOL!

Thanks everyone!

I believe that Christian Light Education has some Canadian history resources.

When I saw the title of the thread I was going to suggest the Our Canadian Girl series too.

Anyway, here's a bunch that we have. Haven't used much from any of them yet, we're just too busy with other stuff right now, but they all look good in their own ways:

Question and Answer Encyclopedia: Canada (Parragon Publishing)
The Kids Book of Aboriginal Peoples in Canada (Diane Silvey, Kids Can Press)
The Kids Book of Canadian History (Carlotta Hacker, Kids Can Press)
Bathroom Book of Canadian History (Barbara Smith, Blue Bike Books)
The Story of Canada (Janet Lunn and Christopher Moore, Key Porter Books)
Courage and Conquest: Discovering Canadian History (Donna Ward, Northwoods Press)

I think I got all of them through Chapters and through Canadian Home Education Resources

This book Story of Canada: New Revised Edition by Janet Lunn was mentioned on another post and is a multiple award winner. Maybe it would help? And have you tried the Canadian Flyer Adventures by Frieda Wishinsky, perhaps?

I'm just re-re-re-(you get the idea)reading Jim Trelease's book on reading aloud right now and he's got these lovely lists of great American biographies and histories for kids. I wish they had the same for Canada!

When I was visiting my family in Canada recently, I got The Story of Canada and The Spirit of Canada. Both are gorgeous books that I can't wait to dive into. They look perfect. But I'm also going to watch this thread for other ideas. I love having books about my home, and you can't get most of them as easily here in the U.S.

My son has been a young intepreter at a historical village this past month and has LOVED it. I think books are great, but there are oodles of resources in our community that highlight history as well.

I googled living history, and on the first page of google (wild - first page!) saw this:

http://www.manitobalivinghistory.com/?page_id=3

Hopefully you are nearby and can get involved.

Have you thought of DVD's.? I know they are more quasi historical than anything else - but at 8 she may enjoy some of the Anne and Avonlea type stuff.

I also came across this on google - A Canadian History magazine for kids:

Good luck!
