5 year old emotions

My 5 year old son has always been a bit unstable. My main question is, does anyone know what causes one to go from laughing right to crying and back and forth? He'll laugh when he should be upset, like when he is getting punished and then all of a sudden the tears start pouring and then he melts down.

Any insight is appreciated!

What you're describing is called "emotional lability."

You should see someone about it. It could be nothing and it could be something.

Lots of things can cause it in kids. General emotional sensitivity, ADHD, hyperthyroidism, and bipolar are all causes.
